Okay, guess what. I thought I would run it until I got back from work, but it actually stopped at 2hours 45 minutes. It errored out. Still I think that's better than a straight up shut down in any case and I can't say why it happened but I'm okay with that result. It certainly beats the 15 minute shut down result. Still I would like to work for better, but I think I can wait for new 35w processors to really do it right.

Ymboc, the PC40 and PC50 for that matter are exactly the same size as the HiPro power supply with all the same mounting points, but with 2 fans vs 1 for the HiPro. But, the mediasmart won't power on. Is there anything I'm missing (like atx vs at) or maybe the open box wasn't such a good idea. I do notice a wire is missing in the pc40 on pin 5(I think) but I suspect it's ground because it's black on the HiPro.

You have both the PC40 & PC50 on hand? (Cool!)... Neither work? Do you have a standard (known good) ATX powersupply kicking around?

Erg... would suck if the unit would have a non-standard powersupply pin-out. I'd be looking for a silkscreen on the stock unit and map the wires to connector pins at this point.. and If I were happy with the a replacement powersupply I'd desolder the cable from the stock power supply and mount it to the new one so I could have the proper length cable (so it all fits into the chassis again).

No don't have PC50 on hand but it is the same dimensions as the PC40. I'm at a loss. The Hipro has the right part number to work in a shuttle and the pc40 will work in a shuttle but that pin5 missing disturbs me.
Edit: the power supply won't turn on with the power button; on full size mother boards the reset button is jumpered to get power supply to turn on, don't know if there are any pins that can be shorted to start it up.

ymboc, It's not pin 5, it's pin 18 and it use to be -5V but not on any of the power supplies I have. It's standard SFX convention. Now don't no what the HiPro is.

SFX? You mean ATX?

I thought all PSUs had a -5V rail... Can you compare the PC40 connector with a 3rd (FullSize) PowerSupply? I've heard of a proprietary HP connector but I thought it was a different shape... What equipment do you have on hand? Multimeter?

The SFX convention looks the same as ATX without the -5V All my full size poower supplies have the same as the PC40 without the -5V in pin 18. The HiPro color codes make no sense when compared to the SFX/ATX
Edit: The mediasmart connector is standard 20 pin marked P1.

OK, just tested the PC40 and it will power up my desktop, so the power supply is good. HP is apparently using standard connectors and non standard pin outs

So... do you have a multimeter handy?

I believe the HP MediaSmart Server is kinda/sorta related to a BTX reference design ("churchill") ...

Compare your multimeter readings with the pinouts from pinouts.ru... see if you can figure out what's going on.

yes, but no idea how to use it except for checking for open connections.

Okay, I finally got back from vacation and had a chance to try the Northbridge fan mod noted by erail. I mounted mine on the left hand side of the Northbridge as erail described using three very small wire ties and everything seems to be working well. While I was at it, I reset the Northbridge heat sink with AS5. The combination of the small fan and the AS5 immediately dropped the Northbridge temp by 5 degrees C (59C to 54C), which I suspect might drop a tad more when the AS5 sets up. The main fans are controlled by the Fan Speed add-in with a -25C offset (actual fan speeds 1700-1800 rpm with a CPU temp of 31). Note that the fan speed add-in was set exactly the same before the AS5/heat sink fan mod, so this is a valid comparison. There is no appreciable increase in fan noise.

While I was in the box, I also swapped out the Sempron for my previously problematic LE-1640. Unfortunately the MSS shut itself down twice, each time within 20 seconds on a seemingly stable boot up process. Each shutdown was preceded by a solid red light. After the second failure, I threw in the towel and went back to the Sempron once again. At this point, I think my LE-1640 is defective and I've decided that I'm done with it for good.

The more you use it the more comfortable you'll be with it... Having a fancy auto-ranging meter helps too... anyway to take (in this case DC) voltage readings connect/clip/hold the black probe to a known ground (like the outside metal parts of the PSU) and touch the point where you want to check the voltage with the red probe...

When working with live equipment you have to use some common sense and know what the capabilities of your meter are in which modes... but generally with low voltage/amperage DC equipment the biggest danger is accidentally shorting two points you shouldn't with your (red) probe.

All that said, feels like we should split off this PSU discussion to a new topic...

Erail: Saw your post after... I see what you mean with the missing -5V on the SFX connector. Try to ignore the colours they can make you jump to conclusions you shouldn't...

What I'd do: with the HiPro PSU completely unplugged do continuity tests between ground and all the pins (to ID potential ground pins).... and then with power going to the PSU (but still otherwise disconnected)I'd use the 'pin-trick' to power up the PSU(s) and then start pegging away with the multimeter...

Geez, I'm a software guy not a hardware jock. What is the pin trick? I have a mediasmart power supply ready to test.

Ymboc figured out the pin trick and tested the supply and from what I can tell they followed color conventions exactly it just is a non standard pin out. They have a wide divergence of power delivery than the pc40 does and I know some VDC carry different amps etc and don't know how to test for that but the basic voltages are correct. I updated the attachment made a couple of posts ago.
