It's probably best if you tell us what your goals are for a replacement: just backups, media storage and streaming, how many clients you have, how much storage you need, do you want to run WHS v1 or something?

Without specifics of your needs, it is not easy to answer this question. For my needs, I'd probably build my own WHS or Linux box unless I found a good deal on a used EX490/EX495.

Hi Bossone,

If your planning on media streaming then you need to know if your server will need to do the transcoding or just delivering the content to your devices which will do the heavy lift of transcoding. You would also need to review your storage needs, if you have a rather large media library then you need to figure out how much storage capacity you will need to store that media.

What it all really boils down to is your needs are. For some the EX470 is more than enough but it does have its limitations. Its never easy to recommend on thing or another because everyone has very different wants, needs and desires. The forums has as section for DIY Home Servers and Massive Storage, which you can review to see what others have built and their reasons for building their servers. Also you will see areas specific to various server models where you can read about various experiences users have with specific servers. The forums are jam packed with all sorts of information which may be helpful to you.

Perhaps you all could help me as well.

My needs are:
1) auto backups that are like on the HP Mediasmart)
2) file storage and need those files available to a 3rd party off site. I currently use Hamachi for them to VirtualVPN into the WHS.
3) I want plug and play. I don't want to have to build something and I want support from a reputable corp.
4) I want online offsite backup.
5) I want to be able to browse to the server via the network and via Hamachi.
6) I want it similar in size to my HP Mediasmart. (I think I have a 475, can't find a model # but it runs software 2.5)
7) I'd like it quiet as it sits in my media room.
8) I'd like it to be black in color.

What my needs are not:
1) I do not need any sort of media management or streaming. I have an xbox but we end up just using pandora.

This is a WHS enthusiast forum, few people talk about other products so you very likely may not get much helpful input on non-WHS devices.

I don't believe anyone is making WHS devices anymore, and I'm not aware of an OEM WHS 2011 device from any mainstream manufacturer. You can find old WHS v1 boxes from HP/Acer/etc or build your own v1 or 2011 box.

Alex,
What are you running these days? I love my EX495, but the recent replacement of the SYS drive and subsequent issues with not being able to restore any backups (and subsequently losing them all to repair) makes me wonder if WHS2011 might be better for my needs.

I'm completely happy with my EX495, even recently cloned a failing system drive to a green Samsung drive with zero issues. It just works for me.

Acer was going to have a WHS 2011 box (the Revo Server) but I'm not sure it ever shipped. They do have this one with SBS Essentials:

http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/bus ... ries/ac100

Overkill for most WHS users, but I wish they would have had this last year when I set up an EX490 for a friend with WHS for her vet practice. SBS Essentials would have worked much better, and this box has a PCI Express expansion slot which would further future proof it. For $999 it's a really good deal and perfect for quite a few small businesses!

WHS 2011 is running great on my EX490. Granted I upgraded the CPU and Memory (memory being the more important of the two) - but I'm also running WHS 2011 on an unmodified DataVault and it's running just fine on with the Atom/2GB of RAM.
