Sorry to ask again, do I need not to bother with the picture file thing if I get connected to the net, would time be best spent ripping and worry about that later and use the jkebox to sort that.

Agreed, don't worry about the picture files for now. The jukebox will handle when you get to that point. Most important for now is to get your library ripped, get comfortable with the flow, and make sure playback works to your expectations (and most importantly, sit back and enjoy a movie!)

Hi,
Just started ripping DVDs for my Dune and I'm a ripping virgin. Under Damian's guidence which has been very appreciated I tried Handbrake, but the video wa choppy and very pixelated. I took this as the safety encoding on the dvd, so I tried MakeMKV, no issues, excellent quality but the file size is 4GB. Is there any way of reducing this, it is so esy to use its a dream, but I would prefer a smaller size and only one process to get to my required result.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

What preset did you use with handbrake?

Another option would be to use DVDShrink

Hi Damian,

To be honest I tried normal them just about every other tweek. changed frame rate, bit rate, aspect ratio.
Is dvd shrink a one go program, so you get finished mkv at the end.

I converted a Avi file I had and then copied the codec details from it and still choppy.

Hope you are well.

Cheers

Encoding is hit or miss tbh.

DVDShrink will simply keep your DVD in the DVD Structure but allow you to shrink down the size. I have had the best luck with this when using DVDs, but then again I am happy just using MakeMKV as 4GB is really not a lot of space (wait until you get to Blu rays!!!)

I know what you are saying, just 1500 dvds will take up at least 6 TB, bit scary. with your set up a drop in the ocean, I was hoping to get them all on the 4TB that is on the Dune.
If I had to pay for a decent converter I would, It's just that nightmare that it doesnt do what ou want after you paid for it

Is there a storage option I could use that is not as advanced as a home sever that would be compatable with a Dune, Like a 10TB external HD.

Would that work ?

Cheers

No worries. Best bet instead of encodiing would be to just use DVDShrink and just keep in a folder structure (or you could even run the result through MakeMKV to come up with a finished mkv)

You are a Genius, Ran trough Dvd Shrink about 15mins and then Make MKV which took 4 mins got it done to 2GB and the quality is good.

Only a bit of mucking about but to save 2 GB, Ill take it.

Haha, sorry I forgot to mention. I actually did that for a large majority of my kids DVDs

Hi Damian,

Quick question, Im up and running now, Laid the ethenet cable and have internet connection, and ripped about 200 films so far. I now turn the Dune on and its asking for a firmware upgrade, which of course is ideal to do, my question is, should I have a Sd card fitted to retain the firmware information or does it save it to my Hard drive, should, In an ideal world should I have the Sd card fitted. What is its function? is it for memory for the Dune itself.

So to break it down, Question No.

1. What function is the SD card?, Memory or media Transfer.
2. Should I have partitioned my HD to allow some Data storage for the Dune itself?
3. How big should the Sd card be?, ( depending on answer 1 )
4. How does or where does the Dune manage its own data? ( dependtant on question 2 )
5. Why does toast always land butter side down?

Thanks for your all your help and patience.

Cheers

1. Both. You can use the SD card as system storage (for adding shortcuts to the Dune menu, BD Live, etc...) or for media transfer/playback

2. You will want to do this. You can do it with your hard drive, or you can use a small thumb drive/SD card strictly for system storage (this is what I do, if you look at my D1 review you will see where I placed the thumb drive inside the unit, not sure if you have the same option with yours)

3. If just being used for system storage it doesn't have to be big, maybe 2-4GB

4. System memory plus system storage (if using, only needed for some of the points I mentioned in #1)

5. What would a chair look like if our knees where on the back of our legs instead of the front (so our legs bent like an ostrich)???
