What is up with hard drive prices right now? The 3TB drive I bought a while back for 119 is now $280?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136874&Tpk=WD30EZRX

The cheapest 2TB drive on Newegg is $199? Is there a shortage of something right now?

Yes, there is, actually. Severe flooding in Thailand, where 40% of the world's hard drives are made, has shuttered many/most HDD factories there. Earlier this week there was a picture in the NY Times online site that showed floodwaters reaching the second story of a Western Digital factory. It probably will be months before production is even close to what it was prior to the floods. Hence sky-high prices.

I've been trolling for refurbs (I'm not afraid to run them) and even they're slim pickings at best.

Dang, might be a good time to pull some empty drives and sell them on ebay.

I'll tell you how bad it is----I sent RMA's for a 2TB WD Green and a 1TB EARS drive and received back from WD - 2 2TB Black drives as replacements. Yeah!!

That must be Western Digital's awesome customer service. I sent in an old 2TB EADS drive and I got back a 2TB drive and a new 3TB drive! Not sure why I got 2 drives back but I am not going to complain.

I've been searching the Black Friday deals in vain. I've gotten a ton of emails over the last week or so from Best Buy, Newegg, Amazon and others for electronics, computers and peripherals. Other than some deals on external USB HDDs of fairly small quantity (mostly 320 GB or less, but there have been a couple 500 GB), there has not bee one single deal on SATA hard drives. Prices are sky-high, and it seems that even with Black Friday almost upon us, nobody is willing to sell hard drives for less than they're going for now. :( :( :(

I found this cool site that tracks prices at newegg over time. Here's the chart for the WD20EARS drive:

http://camelegg.com/product/N82E16822136514

It looks as though prices are coming back to earth. Hopefully they will get back down to <$100/2TB before too long.
