Colleagues,

I am ready to jump on the WHS 2011 wagon after owning a MSS EX475 for years that I have already upgraded to the max. Here is what I have listed for my hardware and I would like your opinion on whether you think it is an overkill. If you think any of the components is an overkill and you can offer alternatives I'll really appreciate it.

_ Case: Fractal Design Array R2 Mini ITX NAS Case w/ 300W SFX PSU
_ Motherboard: SuperMicro X8SIL-F v1.02 LGA1156
_ CPU: Intel Core i5-760 8MB L3 Cache 2.80GHz LGA1156
_ RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 Server Memory Model KVR1333D3E9SK2/4GI
_ Boot HDD: 1 Hitachi 500GB Deskstar 3.5" 7200RPM SATA II 16MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0F10381
_ Data HDD: 2 Hitachi 2TB Deskstar 3.5" 7200RPM SATA II 32MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HDS722020ALA330
_ Connector cables: 4 Aleratec 18IN SATA 2.0 hard drive cable

The total for all of this is around $850.00 USD.

Best regards.

Do you already have the motherboard and CPU or something? If not, I might suggest you go with a Sandy Bridge system instead and save a little money and get better performance.

As a for example, you could go i5-2300 ... better performance than the i5 760, and $30-$40 cheaper. You could even go with an Sandy Bridge i3 and save more. Also are you stuck on using a "server" board with support for ECC memory? There's another place to cut if you want to.

Also, I didn't look up the specs on the case you've chosen, but it has mini-ITX in the name --- will it handle the micro-ATX motherboard you've chosen?

My system is Intel DH67BL/Core i3-2100T/8GB and it works well for WHS 2011.

RehabMan,

Thanks for your reply/opinion.

It's a good thing I have not purchased anything yet because you just saw a big incompatibility between the case and the motherboard. I do want the case because it has 6 drive bays so I will have to research on another motherboard and that will probably take care of the ECC RAM. The SuperMicro X8SIL-F is a good board, what a shame.

I knew somebody will see something wrong!!!

!@#$%^&*()_+ Back to the drawing board!

Regards.

Colleagues,

I had to rethink my build since there were compatibilities with the original components (i.e.: the case and the motherboard). So, here is what I am now thinking of purchasing:

_ Case: NZXT Classic H2, ATX, MicroATX, Baby ATX, 3 external 5.25" bays, 8 internal 3.5"/2.5" expansion slots(one is swappable), 1 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 front ports, 2 120mm front fans, 1 120mm rear fan, 1 140mm top fan, 1 120mm bottom fan
_ PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro M600 RS-600-AMBA-D3 600W ATX12V V2.3 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Bronze Certified Modular Active PFC
_ Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H67M-D2-B3 rev 1.1, Micro ATX, LGA1155, Intel H67, DDR3 1333/1066/800, 16GB RAM, 4 SATA 3Gb/s, 2 SATA 6Gb/s, gigabit LAN, up to 14 USB 2.0/1.1 ports, integrated onboard video
_ CPU: Core i5-2310 6MB L3 Cache 2.90GHz LGA1155
_ RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Non-ECC Unbuffered Desktop Memory Model KVR1333D3N9K2/4G
_ Boot HDD: 1 Hitachi 500GB Deskstar 3.5" 7200RPM SATA II 16MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0F10381
_ Data HDD: 2 Samsung 2TB EcoGreen F4 HD204UI 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" 5400RPM
_ HDD connector cables: 4 Rosewill 18" Serial ATA Black Flat Cable w/ Locking Latch Support 6 Gbps, 3 Gbps, and 1.5 Gbps transfer rate Model RC-18"-SA2-BK

The total for all of this is around $730.00 USD.

Since the MB has onboard video I won't need a graphics card; since I am planning to do the OS install with a USB drive I won't need a DVD drive.

Any opinions, thoughts, alternatives?

Best regards.

You've not said what your intended uses are for this server, unless you're running a heavy load on it the quad core seems like overkill and wasted expense over the i3 that RehabMan mentioned. It also looks like you're still running ECC memory, does the board support that? Will you be mirroring the data drives, or backing them up to something else?

Yakuza,

Thanks for your reply, I value your opinion a lot.

I will be using this server for streaming music and video, transcoding, encoding, data repository, etc, etc. I also want it a bit "future-proof". I am thinking of backing up its data to other drives I have (not sure if I want to put them internally or have them on an external enclosure.

What do you think?

Regarding the RAM, it was a typo that I fixed in the post already, it is non-ECC.

Best regards.

If you plan on doing encoding and transcoding, then the quad could be useful. I'd suggest deciding on backups vs RAID so you know if you need to factor in the expense of a RAID controller. Nothing else is really standing out as issues.

Colleagues,

Build has been completed successfully and will now start to migrate the data from the EX475.

Best regards.

Colleagues,

All data is now migrated from the old MSS EX745 (which I am getting ready to sell) to the new build; no issues whatsoever.

The new build is so fast that it is almost furious! Now... the world is mine!

Regards.

Not over-kill at all. But that was about 6 years ago. So that was a lot of $$$ at that time. They are cheap now....
