I think in this situation it would be best to copy the image created by superduper from MSS to a mac or fat formatted usb drive, insert OSX install disk and proceed to Disk Utility and restore that image from USB.
I dont think you are able to map network shares during the install , so getting an image from external drive is the only option. Good thing MSS has an USB front upfront :)

I apologize if I missed this but, I just want to make sure of something. I currently back up both my MBP and my iMac with Time Machine to an external drive connected to the iMac. I thought I was waiting for the HP update so I could do the Time Machine backups through my WHS but now I am trying to decide if I should also be doing this or only doing this method and forgo Time Machine altogether. Any advice? I am really looking for the best way to recover if I have HD failure. Thanks.

Hey Scott, Great Post

But how are you creating an Image directly to MSS? Are you creating the Image Locally first. The manual seem to suggest that you have to create an Image first because SuperDuper cannot write directly to a Network Drive. I think Im Missing something, hehehe

Thanks

Oops... Hey Scott, Never Mind. I figured it out.

I was not seeing the expanded Dialog Save box on my iMac so I thought I was missing a step, when I just needed to click the little "Blue Triangle" to see MSS Folders.

Great Post Man, Thanks for taking the Time, you Rock! :TR4M:

You do not need disk utility for that. You need to turn in windows file sharing in the system preferences. Then you can mount the share by pressing command+k in the finder and entering smb://server as your share. This works 100%.

Is this possible (connecting to a network share) when recovering Mac OS X from the installation DVD on the target? That was the question... and apparently, connecting to a network shared to restore a disk is not supported from the OS X installer DVD.

The steps to recover over the network, for example from a crashed hard disk:
1) Re-install OS X
2) Restore from Time Machine (and/or disk image) from the network share

Many of us were hoping to avoid re-installing the OS in the outlined scenario, which would seem to be the point of using something SuperDuper over and above Time Machine... If you cannot connect to a network drive during the installer, then it is difficult to understand what using Super Duper to image disks buys you over Time Machine support.

Does anyone have any input for helping me fix this, as I followed the steps outlined and am still getting a login/password challenge to the MSS share and then a failure with Super Duper

The only thing i can think of is the username/password doesn't match on the Mac and Server. Also check the permissions on the folder. One thing you can try is deleting the user on the server and entering it again. Sorry i didn't see this before. During my process in trying to get this to work i ran into the same problems.

First off, i wanted to thank ScottLucky13 for this solution.

I have been using this for backing up my MAC for a while. It looked like it was going perfectly well.

Well. i always say, there is no point in doing a backup if you can't restore your backup.
So... on that note, I decided to do a restore as a test.

I'll remind you guys, I am not a MAC person. i have one for testing for work (and hacking my iphone/ipad)

I read this thread a few times and i saw a bit of confusion and unanswered questions about restoring.

The way I restored my superduper image that was on my WHS.

I put my snow leopard disk into my mac and booted to it.

Once that was booted, instead of installing Snow Leopard, I went to disk utilities.

I selected my system drive and restore.

For the source of the restore, I quickly realized i could not see my WHS SMB share.

I had to copy my superduper image to a usb hard drive. The drive I had was formatted NTFS, This was not a problem (someone said it had to be fatx).

I plugged the USB drive into the mac. (I had turned the mac off while it was copying so i rebooted and followed the steps again. I'm not sure if i could have hot plugged the drive.)

I selected the image on the USB drive and kept getting an error message about the image is not initialised.
I did not realize i needed to double click the image and mount it first and then select the image inside the image.

Once i did that, the restore was very fast and I did not need to install OSX first.

The only 2 things i noticed:
1. It renamed my system drive the name i called my backup image. (this could be an advantage if you have multiple images)
2. if you only have 1 MAC as your ONLY client on your network and a headless WHS, if that mac is crashed, You will have a problem copying your image to a portable drive.

Issue 1 is not an issue at all. Issue 2 could be a PITA for someone.
