I installed Vail on my x510 and since then the 1,2,3, and 4 HDD lights have not worked. Is this fixable or is it just something I will have to get used to?

The reason why the LED's are not functioning is because there is nothing written in Vail or WHS2011RC to support their function. HP wrote code into the WHS Software that was shipped with your server to support the LED functions and hardware monitoring support.

Yeah, it's the same with any other OS you install on this machine (WHS 2, Server 2K8 or whatever). The disk LED's will go out and the health light will be constantly blinking. The lights are pretty much the only thing I miss from my WHS 1 setup, but I am not holding my breath waiting for HP to release a generic driver for them. It also seems extremely difficult to build a third-party 64-bit driver for simply turning the LED's on.

If this is in fact the case (I have the same situation), then it may be a service like the one described in this post.

http://www.mediasmarthome.com/forum/thr ... king-Blue/

Anyone with WHS 1 could test this theory by going into services and turning off "HPMediaSmartService". The HD lights should go off immediatly and the health light should begin to blink. Turn the service back on and it should go back to normal.

Yes, there is a driver and a service required to control the LEDs.

Thanks Alex - Is it the driver that tells the LED's what to do and the service that tells the driver when to do it? I guess even if you could extract them from a running installation, the driver wouldn't work on a 64 bit Vail os. I hate this blinking light, but I can't unhook the front panel without disabling the front USB. Black electrical tape, thats the solution!
