I am sooooo disappointed with my EX470. I am away from home a lot, hence the server. I constantly have trouble accessing it remotely and have to have my wife reboot it. I would bail on it and purchase something reliable (if there is such a thing) but there is so much data on the 3 drives enclosed. Is there a way to upgrade the software, install another OS, without losing the data???? Anybody out there have any suggestions?

forumdood007,

I can understand your frustrations especially when you have a need to connect to your server and its not there. Imagine if you had no one at home to reboot the server that can be even more frustrating but often these connectivity issues can be resolved and not all of then are server related.

I have EX470's running and they serve me well. Connectivity issues can and do occur but are often not always the fault of the server. Sometimes its network cables, others a bad port on a switch and then the router sometimes come into play. I am not saying and issue does not exist with your server but simply pointing out that the issue can also be related to the connections between your Server and the Modem.

There are times when these issues are very difficult to pin point and require a process of ellimination. Some have resolved their issues by changing out the routers themself, others changing cable port connection be it on the router or a switch and sometimes its just a matter of manually configuring the router and or setting the server to be assigned a specific IP from the router.

The other thing to keep in mind is what the EX470 might be busy doing at the time your trying to connect to it. If its busy with a processor intensive application it may not be as responsive as one would like it to be. I am not sure what add-ins or other applications your server might be running or if your EX470 is running the stock processor or RAM or which version of the HP software your running be it the 1.x which it was shipped with or the newer 3.0 which HP sold briefly.

All I can tell you is I own 3 of these units and find them to be very useful but they are not my primary server which is an HP ProLiant which had more horse power because my needs grew and I wanted something that would improve my ability to stream Music and Movies with. Regardless if its an EX470 or another server the connectivity issues can come into play and so its just a matter of troubleshooting them.

Yeah, it is frustrating. I did upgrade the RAM to 2GB. The HP software version is 1.3.8.25155.....bios R02...from 2007. I guess the WHS version is whatever came with the unit...says Windows Home Server with Power Pack 3. There is the original AMD Sempron 3400+ processor in it.
Wondering if there is a need to update any of this? I am sooo tempted to buy an Iomega or Netgear NAS..... but not sure.

No real need to do any immediate upgrading. If your just using your server for backups and as a central storage unit plus accessable from the internet your current configuration will server you well.

Your server does record things to various logs which you can look at to see what the server has to say about things which may clue you into whats happening.

How long have you had your server?

How long have you been experiencing issues connection to your server from the internet?

If remote access was working well before for you has there been any changes you can recall between then and when the issues started?

Do you let your router assign the IP for your server or have you set a fixed IP for your server either within the server itself or on the router?

Do let your server setup the router or have you forwarded ports 80, 443, and 4125 to your server. If you forward these ports to your server and for some reason the IP changes on the server then you will have connectivity issues but if your server has a fixed IP on your network that never changes then forwarding these ports to your server will always work. For the most part 80 is for Http connections, 443 is for Https connections, 4125 is for Remote Desktop Connections to your server.

If your not comfortable with messing around with your router then there is an Add-In available on this site from the Add-Ins TAB called WHS Port Forward that may help resolve your issue. http://www.mediasmartserver.net/add-ins/#WHSPortForward its a nice Add-In for those who do not want to muck around with their router and its very simple to use should you have a need to do some simple port forwarding.

Each router is abit different some work better with WHS then others. If you type in your router make and model in the site search you can see if others are using that router and what issues if any they may be written. You may also find that your router might be used by many without issue. But searching the forums for that is a good place to start and maybe someone had a similar issue and posted how they were able to correct it.

Sometimes its the ISP blocking ports you need but there are work arounds for that too.
