I'm looking to build a server that will do multi stream of playback of HD movies two different rooms. Now I'v build desktop before but never a server. I was wondering if you guys would recommend parts to purchase. I would like the server to be a central part of my digital media.

I'm looking for the server to have at lease 12TB of space and hot swappable, if you could recommend but case to purchase and Mother Board/CPU

thank you

I'd recommend checking out the other topics in this forum, it's got lots of builds that people have done and share their setups, including links to all the parts they used and their experience setting it all up.

check out my sig. I have the Asus 785 board it has 6 sata. I am running quad core and cane stream 2 video. backup and access the system without issues. some things you will just have to decide on style and cost but here are some basics. if you will decode with it get a quad core. 2 gigs memory is good 4 gig if you want to do other things with it as well. you will need at least 6 sata, 8 is great if you want to keep a DVD attached, 600 watt power supply I am impressed with the Cooler master 600 series decent price and alot of cables. the server is really just like a desktop really but functions change depending on how you use it. does it need to be small and quite. small case, few fans. Does it need to have lots of expansion, now or later. bigger case, 9-10 bays and will need a few more fans. you can always attach a nice external USB 3.0 0r Esata unit if you want and leave the expansion for later. Gigabit network but all the new boards have this as standard.

great hot swap trays if you want outside access , http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6816705002

MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131595

CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103872, most are Quad core and if your lucky with this MB it will unlock your 4th core for free best deal around.

power supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817171036

any memory will do. on board video is just fine but any card will do as well.
I put mine in a HAF 912 case , its a large midsize so you will have to just get what you like but if you are thinking about hot swappable you can either go with opening the case and use simple drive slides like the antec 300 , or something like this it would make a great cool , server case, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811103011

It may not be quite tho. if you use a hot swappable tray system. this will hold the one above if you dont need the 5 1/2 opening you can get even more HD up top. the quick lock trays are nice for adding and taking out trays. some of this is just personal taste. I have a TR5M connected to my system so I didnt use the hot swap trays in the server, I have them in my main system which is nice to check out drives and make backup copies for offsite. if noise and size is an issues then you may want to keep the fans to a min or some very large 200mm that turn slow. Let us know what you decide. I did the beta Vail for a while on my DIY system but now I have it setup for HTPC and extra network backup space.

let us know what you decide.

For server comparable in size to what your discribing checkout.

Andromeda
Shawshank
The Beast

All of these can be found in the DiY forum, and will have details of challenges and are updated over time so you can see an evolution.
And they have pics.

You can check out my build via the link in my signature below. I'm running an Intel e5200 dual core processor and 2 GB RAM on a Gigabyte mobo with 8 on board SATA ports and 2 SuperMicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 PCI-X 8 port SATA controllers installed in two regular PCI slots. I'm now up to 19.25 TB of storage (about half used) with 5 empty hot swap slots left to go. I have no problems streaming 2 HD movies to 2 Dune Players simultaneously over a CAT5 wired network.

MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138194
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103871
RAM: Two of this so it would be 8GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146740
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817822004&cm_re=diablotek-_-17-822-004-_-Product
