Just an FYI, when I did this project I wanted to use only tools that were included in the standard version of Win7.
So all of the tools I have used are stock Microsoft and can be found either in the "Disk Manager"
found by right clicking computer in the start menu
Select manage
At the bottom select disk manager.
BE VERY CAREFULL.
Do something wrong here and your system may not boot or you could lose data.
When in doubt either read read and read some more or ask someone.
The old addage measure twice cut once comes to mind.

I have one question. I have been building my Win7 server and i was going to use Raid5 but i also like what you did. The question is what happens if the System Drive "C" dies?

Chasrobin,
Thanks for your help. I guess I will have some things to experiment with once I get Win7 here. Thanks for your help and I may be asking more questions once I actually do this.

Thanks,
Chuck

Mirroring is built into the Disk manager, you will need two identical drives for this.
It takes two drives and copies each write to both so in my case I have four 1.5 TB drives mirrored for a total of 3TB of redundant space.
You can see them listed as my A & B drives.
To do it install two blank drives right click one of them select mirror then select it's partner when prompted.
Click finish and wait for it to format.
The all way sync is good if you don't want to have that complexity in one system but then you will need another system on to replicate too with atleast the same amount of storage.

No, problem
Bare in mind I do not want to discourage use of WHS, I still feel it is an awsome product and use it myself on my webserver.
It provides some tools that would be very hard to replicate.
I went on the Win7 path as it put more of the tools I use in one package, and my hardware was better suited for it.
The playback performance is outstanding I have MCE (Media Center) integrated and since Vail will not provide the storage pool any longer that carrot was removed from the picture.
I would advise if you have a choice of raid vs non raid controllers I would slant toward raid with cache at this point.
And look toward drives such as the Hitachi 7K3000 as it's very big and very fast with a 6gb interface couple that with say an Adaptec 6445 or 6808 ran through a SAS expander like the Areca ARC-8026 or the HP 468406-B21 and you have 6GB front to back use your favorite flavor of raid and away you go.

BTW, Fans
I am still working on the sleepkeeper script from above.
I now see a need for day of the week awareness so I will be adding that.
As well as a 60sec popup asking if it's you want to abort the shutdown but defaulting to continue to shutdown.
I ran into a couple of time where I was working on the system paused long enough for it to go to sleep (Hit the can)
and it shut down on me.
Usually on weekends when I tend to work more.
I hope to post this new ver this weekend or early next week, as usual I use only Microsoft tools so you can lookup everything yourself but use it at your own risk.

Chasrobin,
I like WHS too, that is why I waited so long to change. However, I think I will try the current version in a Virtual PC environment and see how that goes. If it is fine, I may do that when Vail ever releases just to see how it is. If it has what I want, minus DE, then I may go back to running Vail exclusively. Time will tell.

Also, did you ever create that tool to collect a text file listing of every volume hourly? I'm interested in it if you have it available.

Thanks,
Chuck

I will post something this weekend for that.
I may just include that function in the sleepkeeper tool as well.
That piece is super simple.
But it will need to be tweaked to match your system, I can help with that.

an example of the command would be
ran from a command line.
"dir /B/S c:\ > c:\temp\output.txt"
That would produce a list of all files for the C: drive
to see alternatives you can type "Dir /?" and it will tell you how to tweak it some.

Chasrobin,
That looks simple enough. How you you run it at a set time? Was that going to be your tool? Also, I'm not interested in your other tool, so maybe separate things out would be best if you were going to post the tool.

Thanks,
Chuck

In win7 under Administrative tools look at "Task Scheduler"
Use the same setting from my other tool
i.e.
User must be logged in to run.
Run with highest
The rest is simple multi choice check boxes.
Let me know if you have any problems.

command would be "cmd /c" options would be "dir /B/S c:\ > c:\temp\output.txt"
Change the drive letter to match whichever drive your scanning and make the output name unique i.e output-drv-G.txt
otherwise you will over write your gathered info.

Ok here's a drive logging tool.
It checks for the existance of every drive letter then gathers the file/folder info.
Then creates a unique file based on day/date/time-drv.
Just copy the script below and save it as driveslog.cmd
Then in task scheduler schedule it to execute as often as you like.

Begin Script
****************************************************
@echo off

if not exist c:\temp\drv-logs\nul mkdir c:\temp\drv-logs

set DR=%%C
set MR=%%B
set YR=%%D
set day=%%A
)

for /F "tokens=1-4 delims=: " %%A in ('time /t') do (
set AMPM=%%C
set MN=%%B

)

If exist A:\nul cmd /c "dir /s/b a:\ > c:\temp\drv-logs\%day%-%MR%%DR%%YR%-%HR%%AMPM%-DRV-A.txt"

Ok, so after tinkering a bit here's what I have.
A tool that you can set a time of day to shutdown your system, conditionally if none of your clients systems are alive.
This is so if you have a server you want to be off to save power but not have to shut it down yourself or worry it will shutoff on you while watching movies or recorded TV.
What I do is I use a Bios RTC alarm to turn on my monster every day at 5:20pm, then I run my sleepkeeper tools starting at 10pm if any of my clients are alive it will stay on and retest every few minutes until no clients are alive then it runs a log of all the files on all the drives it can find.
It keeps those logs for a week cycling through each weekday prior to over writing the log.
It will as if it's ok to shutdown but if you do not stop it it will shutdown automatically.
Should you interupt the auto shutdown it will wait 1/2 hour and test again.

As stated before this is a work in progress, use at your own risk, if you know scripting feel free to make suggestions.

Copy these lines into a notepad and save as sleepkeeper.cmd
Use task scheduler to run it nightly at 10pm.

If you need help or tweak I will try to help.

You will need sleep.exe which you can download here.

Just a qwik point, of course this script uses my paths and drive letters, and client IP's.
I can help you tweak it as necesarry if you don't understand scripting.
I may update it later with predefined info or an install tool that makes the needed changes.
That is if there is enough interest to warrant doing the work.
for now you must manually update the paths and client ip's
