Hello everybody.

I like the VAIL beta / Server 2008 R2 very much and the EX 470 (after upgrades) performs very well on that.
But there is one big thing that's missing compared to WHS V1 - the LEDs !

Without the proper service they just dont work as they did in WHS V1.
I know that the "hpmssservice.exe" is the service needed to get the LEDs working.

I tried to install that service on the 2008 R2 server with "InstallUtil.exe" which is located in the .NET 2.0 folder within Windows directory but until now I was not successful in installing that as a service.

Did anybody get it to work - maybe on other Windows OS's where the HP package isn't preinstalled. It would be great to get it running, I don't want to miss the LED feature.

Any help is welcome.

Regards

Thomas

OK, let me add new info:

I managed to install that service with the "sc" command:

Code:
sc create HPMediaSmart binpath= "C:\Program files\HP MediaSmart Server\HpmssService.exe"

This creates a service called "HPMediaSmart" which starts the "HpmssService.exe". I could successfully start this service but this was inside a virtual 2008 R2 server - so I don't know if it works. Can someone else please try this? I can't boot the physical 2008 off of the EX470 at the moment.

Regards

Thomas

I have good and bad news.

I tried it on the real EX470 with little success. The service is starting and running, but not working as expected.
There are many assemblies and libraries involved to get it working.

The second problem is, that Server 2008 is 64 bit, but the HPMSSService and it's files has been compiled for 32 bit W2K3.
I manged to start the service exe as 32 bit process but still no LEDs for the drives. The status LED is blinking all the time.

I think I need help from somebody who has experience in .Net programming. Anybody out there?

Regards

Thomas

You also need the WNAS.sys driver that interfaces between the service and the hardware. I'd planned to work on this some months ago but with the crippling of Vail and its uncertain future I've significantly lowered this on my priority list.

Ok, thanks for that hint. But that brings me to another problem with 64bit Server 2008. As the driver was not written to work in 64bit OS... Do you have time to work on that whole project? I always need to shutdown my productive MSS to boot up the 2008 Server for testing...

Unlikely, as I said it is very low on my priority list.

Unfortunatenly not. During the week I don't have time to work on that. On weekends there is sometimes other stuff to do... Do you have a EX47x machine running Server 2008 R2 already?

I have one setup I can help test with if you need it? It's a EX475 with 2GB RAM upgrade.

Please copy the whole "HP MediaSmart Server" folder from program files dir to the Server 2008. Then add the service as described above. We then have to try to get the drive running as yakuza mentioned.

Okay, so this appears to be the thread I've been looking for. Just upgraded my EX495 to Server 2008R2 and surprise surprise got the annoying blinking health light. Unfortunately I no longer have access to my WHS "HP MediaSmart Server" folder to copy it over into my 2008 R2 install. Can someone please provide a copy of this folder along with the WNAS.sys driver mentioned so that I can get the service installed and try tinkering around with this?

TIA,

Dave

I've been considering installing vanilla WHS v1 on my Ex490 as I'm not using any of the HP specific add ons..... The only thing I would miss is all the nice LED action....

Has anyone got any thoughts on how to get the LEDs still to work nicely on a vanilla build of WHS v1?

It's the same as described in this topic, you need the driver and you need the service, and the service has many dependencies on HP code and configuration. It will be non-trivial to make it work without writing custom code.
