Is it possible to selectively restore files from a Time Machine backup of a different Mac, stored on a MediaSmart 490EX?

No, Time Machine backups are bound to a specific machine. You would have to access the file from the computer that was backed up and copy it to the machine on which you want to use it.

I have tried to do this, but it seems that a time machine backup is one large file. When you restore after a fresh install, you can choose what parts you want to restore (settings, documents, applications, etc), but you cannot restore in any other way. I prefer to use Super Duper. It allows you go boot from the backup as well as selectively restore.
