I've had the data vault since last June and it's been working fine. I run it usually daily to watch movies and have lights out turn it off at 11:30pm. Today when I turned it on I couldn't access it. Now I notice that the network light on the front is not lit. I have tried a few different cables and made sure that they were connecting to the router ok. Checked them by attaching a pc and it would work fine.

Does this sound like a hardware failure, I sure hope not but can't think of what else it could be. I didn't access it in the last couple of days with remote access so there is no way the network adapter could of got turned off. The only thing other than hardware would be the bios got corrupt but I don't know how that would happen.

Any suggestions. Terrible time for it to go down when I'm trying to watch Christmas movies.

Thanks......

Are the network lights blinking on the back? To my knowledge the Network LED is simply electrically controlled, not software controlled, so it should light up when a cable is connected. If it's not, then your network port may have died. :( We have a Guide about using a USB adapter with the server.

Only one of the lights in back was blinking, the yellow, so I know it was getting some connection.

I messed around with this thing for hours. Trying different cables, different ports and directly to the router but it was a no go. I even took the drives out and tried to do a restore, tried everything. Finally i put the drives back in and tried it once more but still no go. No network at all, I couldn't log in or access the drives.

So I disconnected it and figured I would be doing a RMA tomorrow. It sat for a couple of hours, bugging the hell out of me so I decided to try again. I plugged it back in and it fired right up. I really think it has something to do with the network port but now if it's intermittent it's going to be harder to diagnose and get HP to repair it. I bought it last June so I still have a little while on the warranty.

Could you direct me to the USB guide you mentioned. I have a USB network adapter and never even though of using that. I do have the cable and adapter to connect a monitor to it but I don't want to take the unit apart and void the warranty.

Thanks for the reply, it's greatly appreciated.

Glad you got it working! For future reference the "Guides" section of the site is linked in the top Nav bar and the site search feature works really well too. :) Here's the link: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/06 ... ur-server/

I did find it using the search, it works much better than some forums. I haven't tried the USB Network adapter I have yet, but since it's not a gigabit I ordered a new one from Monoprice. It could be a life saver if this should happen again.

I have another question, off topic but I've been trying to figure this out.

When I open my Remote Desktop icon, in the drop down menu there are a number of servers to select from. Some of these are old names and IP addresses and I'm trying to delete them from the menu but can't find out how to. I have tried searching and find everthing about the the RD except how to clear that menu. Do you have any idea how to do it?

Thanks for your help and the replies.

I just posted in the topic about the Server Name change too. Weird.

Thanks Alex
That was easy enough but why does MS have to make it so difficult to do simple tasks, editing the registry isn't for the average user. I've done it many times so it's no big deal for me. My biggest mistake was searching MS website for help. When will I learn, I use Google for everything else.
Take care,
Al

Yeah I've found the built-in search on pretty much all MS sites is pretty much useless.

I purchased a USB Network Adapter from Monoprice. Got it last night. It's identical to the Sabrent, costs a little less, uses same drivers. http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... 1&format=2
I found updated drivers on Sabrent's website. I install the drivers on the HP and installed it. I did have to go into device manager and Scan for Hardware changes for it to find it. But once it did it works great. I wanted to have the drivers installed ahead of time in case my HP ethernet stops working again. I'll be doing the same on the Acer. "Just In Case"

I bought the Video Keyboard/Mouse unit for these last summer. Installing it on the Acer was a breeze but it looks a little bit more involved on the HP. I'm not sure if I want to tear down the HP while it's still in warranty. I ordered an extra cable so I can leave them installed permenantly and just attach the connector when needed. It looks like you have to pull the entire HP guts out to get it in. Is that right?

Merry Christmas,
Al (Allen)

Yeah you do have to pull the guts to connect the cable, I've got pretty detailed teardown instructions here:

I lost my network connection again. I unplugged it for a few minutes to use the Network cable on my laptop. When I plugged it back in (unit off) and turned the HP back on the light in front didn't come on and no network. So i plugged the cable into the USB network adapter and had instant access. I'm glad I loaded the drivers when I did have access to it.

I plugged another network cable into the HP and it states Network cable unplugged. So it has to be a hardware issue since the same cable works with the USB adapter.

Darnnnnnn. Now that means I'm going to have to RMA it. I wonder how much that will cost and how long it will take.

It seems to connect much faster with the USB adapter too but I don't want to permenantly use it like that.

I just got off the phone with HP. They had me run through some tests on the server and agreeded that the network port is defective so they are replacing the unit. They are doing a cross-dock shipment, which I was glad to hear they would do.
