Sorry to hear that some of you are having issues w/ the LE-1640. I have had 0 issues so far. The CPU idels at 30-33C (about 4-6 degrees cooler than stock)

I have been having some concerns about the heat my new CPU is giving off.

Here is my current configuration...

2 GB of G. Skill RAM w/ Heat Shield
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231119

AMD LE-1640
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103239&Tpk=Athlon%2BLE-1640

Artic Silver 5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007

My system temp is idling at 28’C to 29'C and my CPU is at 40’C to 42'C. (This is with maybe 2 to 3 grains of rice size drops of Artic Silver 5). My buddy has 2 GB of RAM and the stock CPU and his CPU is idling at 28’C. What is the power draw on the stock CPU? Is it less than the LE-1640 (45Watts)?

Using the Server

During the process of adding 3 printer drivers, I am now at 28'C and my CPU is 67'C (fans jamming at 2100 rpm's).

What did I do wrong?

How hot does the standard CPU run under moderate loads?

Should I be concerned with these types of temperatures?

If you haven't seen it yet, Donavon West over at homeserverhacks.com has recently posted a tutorial (similar to the RAM upgrade one) on upgrading the processor on the HP MSS. As been mentioned before, This will void your warranty....

I read through this thread a few days ago. I'd already done the memory upgrade and thought £35 to upgrade the processor was a no brainer. The replacement LE1640 came yesterday so I thought I'd save it for a weekend project. The Mrs and the kids are away so I'm home alone. As usual I couldn't wait. The upgrade took all of 10 minutes max. The MSS booted fine and the temps are ok.

Now all I have to do for the rest of the weekend is drink beer

OK, I am convinced.... Memory and 1640 on order -- along with a WD 1 TB disk. Next week, sometime, I hope.... Will just salivate in the interim....

(Since I had to pay shipping for some Arctic Silver anyway, I grabbed a couple spare fans as cheap insurance that I will never need them!)

Has anyone looked into getting a BIOS update to support X2 Processors (ie: BE-2x00)?

Yakuza (whom as we know is *the* alex) has said x2 chips will not work without a bios update after I mused about it earlier in another thread.

But what about a 3rd Party Bios update... has anyone else looked into it? I've sent a request into eSupport.com (formerly Unicore)... I'll let you know what becomes of it..

Update: Yeah that's a non-starter with eSupport.com/Unicore. Either they have the update or they don't... I thought they would develop/modify/update for a fee but it seems all they're about is connecting you with bios' that already exist (but may not be freely available).

I've attached a couple of screenshots of the post page & device listing for reference -- if anyone else wants to pursue as well.

WOW!!! Am I cookin' now! Just upgraded to 2 GB and LE-1640. Very noticeable performance increase, especially in "balancing".

No, I have not done any formal before or after measurements. I accepted the improvements based on faith in those of you who have gone before. And I was not disappointed in the least! Got my $100 (and 15 minutes of time) worth!

To all who have contributed to this thread: THANK-YOU!!!

Such an easy upgrade. I ran into zero problems. My new CPU is actually running cooler than the old CPU under similar loads. Have yet to see 100% CPU utilization after I upgraded.
Slight twist of the heatsink popped it right off of the old CPU. LOTS of thermal paste to remove. Heatsink could stand to be polished as it is pretty rough. Seems to work fine with the thin layer of Artic Silver 5 I put on the entire top of the CPU. Did a few slight twists of the heatsink before screwing it down to mate the paste up with the heatsink.
Just another CPU upgrade for me! Done this dozens of times now on computers over the years...

I see a lot of folks saying that the memory upgrade was fine for them and not to bother with the CPU upgrade. I find that NOT to be true.
This server was built so that the system pretty much was maxed out with the components used. Before any upgrades, the memory and the CPU would both be maxed out when doing heavy file transfers or streaming stuff. When I upgraded just the memory, the CPU now became the limiting factor and I saw a lot of 100% CPU pegs.
After the CPU upgrade, the system seems to be much more balanced. Memory is around 50-60% and CPU utilization rarely gets above 75%. The CPU is running COOLER because it is able to throttle down to 1000MHz much more frequently now.
In for a penny, in for a pound. If you are going to upgrade one, upgrade them both!

I toattlay agree John... When the cost is negligible (basically $45ish each for the two parts) and the process is super easy why not just do them both... I mean you have the whole thing disassembled anyway.[/quote]

Crap! The AMD LE-1640 is now deactivated at Newegg. I had to order the 1620 CPU. I wish I had ordered it last week when I was thinking about it. It looks like there is still a good performance increase between the LE-1620 and the LE-1640 judging by the speeds that someone posted earlier in the thread.
And with my luck, in a few days, Newegg will have chip again. Although I would think if they were planning on getting more in it would just say out of stock and not Deactivated.
Oh well, i guess the 2.4Ghz chip will have to do. i want to get it in before I expand my system from 4 drives to 8 drives with the port mutliplier.

Feast your eyes on this

It works... kinda... WHS won't boot though. In the old days changing from 1 Cpu to 2 CPU meant doing a windows 'repair' to install a different kernel ie: "ACPI UniProcessor PC" vs "ACPI Multiprocessor PC". Screeny of where bootlog hangs is also attached. I'm not sure if the procedure is still a repair-(re)install or simply changing it under the computer heading in the device manager works now (this would have to be done while the Single Core Chip is still installed).

Update: Changed the Computer Type in the device manager to multiprocessor... but still hanging on boot... going to try to repair with a WHS disk.

I would assume that Microsoft's Windows Home Server software would be capable of multithreading enough to take advantage of a dual core processor. After all, there are a ton of multicore processors running servers out there. But has anyone checked the specs to see if that is one of MS bullet points for WHS? Would not do anyone much good to dual core the sucker if WHS is only capable of running one CPU core at a time.

As was previously stated the LE-1640 appears to be no longer available from NewEgg. Yesterday it was 'Backordered', now it says 'Deactivated'. A search of the AMD website shows the LE-1600 and the LE-1620 as being available, but no mention of the LE-1640 being available. Don't know of that means it is truely discontinued or not. However, they can be found in good qantity (~700 units) at Upgrade Nation http://www.upgradenation.com/AMD_ATHLON ... 68100.html. At first I did not think this was the correct chip, but the AMD part numbers match with NewEgg's and if you scroll down you'll see the reference to LE-1640.

They are selling them for $60.42 plus shipping. A tad more pricey than NewEgg, but at least they have them. My Google search did not show any other vendors.
