My ex490 has a 20GB SYS-partition containing Windows and some additional software installed by me.

In the "Computers & Backup" part of the "Windows Home Server Console" I cannot find anything on how to backup the SYS-partition. I assumed there would be such an option. Am I wrong?

How do others backup the SYS-partition? And if nobody does a backup of the SYS-partition, why not?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :mss:

Unfortunately, the current version of WHS does not allow the system drive ( C partition) to be backed up. It's something we'd all like to see and others have tried different approaches such as imaging the drive with no success.

Anyone with an opinion on this means to backup the SYS-drive?
Backup Windows Server 2003: http://www.ilopia.com/Articles/WindowsServer2003/Backup.aspx

Why would this be a good idea, or why not at all?

Thanks.

You can use it to backup files but if you have more than one drive in your machine then the system state isnt worth doing. I have recovered a single drive system using NT Backup but doing it to a multi drive system is just plain ugly. So use it to backup files only, not your users and settings and your are ok.

I hooked my WHS box into my Linux-Backup Solution running Backup-PC. This way I backup my System-Partition to independent Hardware. I have do admit though that I did not use it for recovery of the whole drive yet.

But that's just the thing. I want to backup my users and settings and all...

Anyone ever tried to create an image of the C-partition on another computer, by temporarily placing the hard disk containing the system partition as an extra drive in another computer?

In case of failure of the system hard disk, if such an image would be placed on a new hard disk and placed in the WHS, could this evade a server restore?

No, a backup and restore of the C: drive doesn't work unfortunately. You can see more here. http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2010/01 ... tem-drive/
