Actually, since SEAGATE acquired MAXTOR, any MAXTOR drive you buy is actually manufactured by Seagate. . . .Its just got a MAXTOR label on it.

Not sure what difference what you posted makes, The topic is hard drive deals

I'm sure 90% of people here are well aware of the seagate/maxtor relationship, just not sure why me picking up a maxtor for $199 has anything to do with it? By the way the seagate unit siting next to the maxtor with same specs was $299

What's your problem COPC? I simply stated that as a FACT where others can use that as a comparison to price versus brand . . . .
Did you wake up with your panties in a wad or something ? ?

I'm kind of with you on this on Greg...

While the main topic is hard drive deals... My definition of a deal is something that is useful to me, performs well and has a reasonable price. I might opt to get a faster more expensive drive over a less expensive or slower "green" drive. That being said... a thread like this one can only benefit from additional information that would help some one to obtain what they feel to be... the best hard drive deal.

What I meant on the ORIGINAL message before another member jumped down my throat was . . . . . .

I stated that SEAGATE and MAXTOR had merged, and that if you bought a MAXTOR drive, then it was more than likely "currently" made by Seagate.

I recently bought a MAXTOR "ONE TOUCH 4" drive, and guess what was in it? A SEAGATE 750GB Drive..

I think Seagate kept the MAXTOR line as their "value" line. Maxtor's are typically cheaper than the SEAGATE branded products.
something else I've noticed is that "some" of the maxtor products carry a THREE-YEAR warranty, where is most, if not all, the SEAGATE products carry a FIVE-YEAR Warranty.

So, in finding a good "DEAL" on a hard drive, internal of external, and knowing that MAXTOR and SEAGATE were mostly the same.......AND
that is both drives were sitting side by side on the shelf, and the MAXTOR drive was $75 cheaper than the SEAGATE, then in most cases, I would probably opt for the best "DEAL", and buy the Maxtor.

Only a few retailers here still carry the MAXTOR Line, and it will probably be my "guess" that Seagate will some day eliminate the "MAXTOR" name, but that's my guess.

So, in my ORIGINAL post, Although I was stating a fact between MAXTOR and SEAGATE, I am sorry that one member took offense to the post, and that I didn't fully clarify myself in what I was trying to convey.

I wrote that message at 4am as I was getting ready for work. I dont guess my brain was fully functioning! HA HA

You guys have me to thank for that.... Every time I buy something the price on that (or on a reasonable alternative) immediately drops! (I just added a WD 1 TB drive!)

Kickin' deal. A lot of these I'm torn between stocking up early, or waiting a few months till I really need them in hopes the prices will go down.

I have a WD GP 1TB but wanted the Seagate only for the 5 year warranty (and 32mb cache). So I was glad to get it Sunday.

Those of you that can't find it at your store, check the website. Same price and free shipping. It will be a while before this drive comes back down to this price.

I'm not sure of the qualifications, but I just got an email that said I could get $25 off a $75 purchase at Buy.com if I used Google Checkout.

It can be used for anything (I got a wireless N USB adapter), including hard drives.

Again, I'm not sure who it applies to, so if someone else tries to use Google Checkout to get this deal (the rebate should be apparent at the place you choose shipping), then let us know!
