For any current/potential Dune owners, I thought I would set up a thread for any Dune related discussions. I have had the Dune BD Prime for almost a month now and it has been a really nice machine. Here is some info that I think is helpful:

Dune BD Prime Review
Dune Smart D1 Review
Setting Up the Zappiti Movie/TV Show Jukebox
Setting up yaDIS 2.0
Controlling the Dune with the My Movies App
Setting up My Movies with TV Show Support
Setting up Samba for WHS v1 Users
Setting up NFS for WHS v1 Users

I really appreciate all you do for the community-

I was going to get some small HTPCs to receive media from my WHS using Win7 and Mymovies, but it looks like for what I want to do, these are better. I have also seen a big increase in the attention Dune players are getting from Mymovies.

So- it looks like one of the new Dune smart players make the most sense for me- if I could just get advice between the models.

I currently have 0 blue ray movies, and If I get started down that path, I will probably rip them to the WHS. Do not really care about BR live or too much additional content for now, but would probably rip to folders.

Currently rip movies to folders (Mostly only the movies, If I want the extras, I can haul out the disk.)

As mentioned I use Mymovies for WHS, and do not have any issues.

Most areas have cat 6, but also have N and G capability.

The website isn't really clear on the differences between the D1 and H1, the hot swappable drive bay costs less? what is the advantage of the H1?

Besides the BR disc- any advantages to the B1?

Thanks in advance

The main difference from what I can tell between the three models:

H1 - hot swap 3.5" bay
D1 - LCD screen (probably useless but looks nice!). Accepts a 3.5" drive internally
B1 - BluRay drive, no LCD or 3.5" internal drive

As far as playback/functionality they should otherwise be identical. If you see no need to have a BluRay drive then it really comes down to the H1 or D1. At that point it is probably personal preference. For example, I like the look of the LCD screen over the H1 so I would probably spend the extra $20 (the LCD screen is why the D1 costs more then the H1), but for others that may not be worth the extra cost. If someone plans on swapping out a lot of drives then the H1 may make the most sense.

One other interesting thing to note, if you have a DVD/BR Drive on your WHS, using MakeMKV you can actually stream a Disc from this ROM drive to media players. I tested this with my PCH and it worked, I was hoping to test with the Dune either today or tomorrow to see if I get the same result. I bring this up because on the rare occasion that you would want to actually play the disc this would offer a good alternative to actually needing a player with a ROM drive.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Im new to all of this.

Im just getting to a point where I want to start backing up all of my DVDs to an external hard drive.
So Im trying to understand how to do the menus.

Right now Im planning on using AnyDVD and ImageBurn or DVD Fab to do ISO type files on all the backups.

The menus with Zappiti look really nice.

I have read the guide but Im not sure on some things.
If Im using an external drive would I download Zappiti to the external hard drive or to my computer?
At what point of the backup would I use Zappiti to create the menus? After I have have done the backup and image burn and they are sitting on the hard drive as a ISO file? Is this when I do the menus at the end?

You would install the Zappiti program on your PC. You then run Zappiti on your PC to do all the scraping, etc... Once done you then export the Zappiti jukebox. Where you export it is up to you, as long as your Dune can access it. I export the jukebox t o my Windows Home Server. I know other people who simply export it to a thumb drive and then connect that drive to the Dune. YOu could also export the Zappiti jukebox to the same external hard drive where you will be storing your movies.

As far as the work flow, ideally you would rip all your DVDs and have them stored on your external drive. With your external drive connected to your PC you would then run Zappiti and let it do its magic. When you are done you then would export the jukebox to access on the Dune.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Hey all!

Does anyone (Damian?) have any info on the new Dune HD Lite 53D?
At $169 the price is great, but I'm curious what I'd be giving up over, say, the H1?

I am interested in playing from BDMV folders on the Dune, and hopefully having access to all the menus and extra content (as well as playing MKV's) and would like support for TRUE HD, DTS HD, etc.)

Thanks everyone! :)

-Greg

First off, welcome to the forums :mss:

My understanding the main feature you will lose with the Dune HD Lite is full BD Menus. It hasn't been released yet so I cannot confirm otherwise. Based on what you want (BDMV Folder with access to all the menus) the Dune HD Lite is probably not for you. Unfortunately only a very few players have full BD Menu support (Dune Smart/Base/Prime, PCH C200, and HDX BD1)

Hey Damian - I finally sprang for a Dune Player (DB Prime), but am having some setup issues. I've gotten past all the typical network collection problems, instead, I'm having what I think is probably more of a My Movies problem. Check out my post on AVSForum, where I know you are also a frequent contributor: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost ... count=5355
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Update - the MyMovies browsing problems were solved by updating the firmware in the Dune Player. Note: If you want the Dune to work with the most recent version of MyMovies, you need to use the new beta Dune firmware. The MyMovies Dune instructions available on the WIKI at mymovies.dk says you need at least firmware 100413_1555 (the most recent "stable" release - see the picture below) but that's not true, it didn't work.

I updated the Dune to firmware 100916_2027_beta and now everything works as intended.

Thanks for sharing, I was following along your posts on AVS, had a feeling it was a fw issue. What are your thoughts of the Dune so far?

Other than the price, this thing really seems to be the promised land of streaming, assuming the right front end interface. I'm pretty happy with MyMovies, and the integration with the Dune (my initial firmware struggle aside) is truly first class. I've only had it up and running a few days now, but so far, I'm a believer.

From what I have heard, HDI Dune may be working towards more tightly integrating MyMovies into its players (i.e. when you boot up the Dune it would load right into MyMovies, possibly IP control, etc...). I am waiting for tv show episode integration in MyMovies before I can consider using over Zappiti. I believe I have had the Prime for a little over 3 months and so far the player has been absolutely rock solid for me (and my wife and I probably use it nearly every day)

Glad to hear how solid the Dune has performed for you, and for the missus as well. WAF is one of the key reasons I got the Dune. I bought a PCH A-110 about a year ago, and I swear every time she touches the remote that thing goes sideways on her. Last night our 5-year-old wanted to watch Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, so I handed my wife the remote and said "go for it." Without any training (other than to tell her to look for the MyMovies icon on the Dune's home screen) she fired it up without any questions or issues. Something she probably couldn't have accomplished on the PCH (even though I do run YAMJ) after having it in the house for a year.

I haven't gotten into storing TV episodes yet, other than multi-disc full-season sets like the original Star Trek collection, so MyMovies suits my purposes completely for now. TIVO takes care of the TV stuff for me.
