I'm running a Macbook with SnowLeopard and backing up to my HP EX490 via Time Machine. Both are running the latest patches of their respective OSes.

Often, when it hasn't backed up in a couple of days, I'm getting kernel panics when it first starts to actually back up (i.e. after the "calculating changes" finishes). According to the crash logs, it looks like the problem is with the hpVDproxy program.

Has anyone else seen this? Is there a way I can report this issue to HP?

Below is an example of the top of the crash log:

I have not seen any kernel panics with my EX490 on either of my systems. How long has your Ex490 been up and running? Do you boot into the 64 bit kernel?

System is booted in 32bit kernel. Not exactly sure of the uptime on the EX490, but it's been rebooted a couple of times in the past month.

You're fortunate. I usually need to reboot mine a couple of times a week. Of course, that's one of the reasons why I mainly use Macs.

Did you install the connector software from the DVD, or from the software share on the server? Have you tried reinstalling the connector software? Are these kernel panics something recent, or have they been going on since you first installed the connector?

I installed the software from the server. They started in Dec, I think, but I'm not 100% sure: I don't recall them from earlier.

I've run into this problem about 2-3 times. I think it's related to hard disk corruption on the mac. I'd suggest rebooting using your system CD and running disk utility on your HD, or rebooting using Command-S and running fsck -fy at the root prompt.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417

So far, fsck has found minor corruption issues each time, and repairing the HD has stopped the recurrence of the kernel panic mutex issue.

I am not sure if this will help but have you tried restoring permissions through OSx's Disk Utility? Sometimes letting that tool run can fix a lot of those sorts of panics. Just a thought.

I have this exact same issue with a EX485 and Mac OS X 10.6.4. The Virtual Disk proxy will take my MacOS down once a week or sometimes more often.

Example kernel panic log below.

I'll try repairing disk permissions and fsck per the threads above.

I ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions, which reported success. (There were definitely errors found and fixed.)

Alas, another kernel panic today. Anyone else have any ideas?
