I'm looking at turning my existing tower system into a WHS. I have currently:

Antec Full tower case (5 ext. 5.25, 6 int. 3.5, 1 ext. 3.5 HDD)
Antec Neo 550 watt PS (will replace in near/mid future with Corsair 750W)
Abit KN9 SLI motherboard (6 SATAII, 1 eSATA, 10 USB, 7.1 sound and 2X Gigabit Lan)
AMD Athlon X2 6000+ (AM2)
OCZ Memory DDR2-800 2GB
Geforce 7300GT graphics
WD 320GB HDD X4

Would need to purchase:

Icy Dock MB455SPF-B Internal drive enclosure 5 in 3 for hot swap. This would be used for pooled drives only. They also have a 3 in 2 that I may purchase and along with that I would need a SATA pcie card. I would use two of the drives for pooled storage and one would be used for backups, etc. If I run out of room there I would start using the internal 3.5 bays.

I've had the case for about 5 - 6 yrs now. I think I'm getting my money's worth from it. The PS, MB, CPU and Graphics are only 3 - 4yrs old and they run like a champ. I don't think I'll have a problem with cooling as I can still add a fan or three to the case.

I'll build a new smaller (yeah right) system for myself (gotta justify it somehow with the wife).

Now for the important part of it all, the server shall be called either ODYSSEY or MEDUSA.

Anything that I am missing?

More disk. Lots more disk. You'll blow through 1.2TB in a hurry if you start ripping movies, especially Bluray, especially if you enable folder duplication on your Videos share.

Thought that was a given!

As I am just starting to convert some old VHS movies to computer (for the grandkids) and plan on converting our super 8 movies to computer (for the wife) I'll be adding more disk as needed.

Depending on the quality of your case fans, you may want to invest in some new ones. With all those HDDs coming, it's gonna get warm in there.
