Hi Fulg,

I just took the plunge and swapped out my PSU fan with the Sunon 40x40x20mm Medium Speed Fan KD1204PKB2. http://www.coolerguys.com/840556081296.html
Although it does not get close to the CFM of the stock 10.3 vs 7.7 - fulg has told me that his MSS running SilenX fan @ 6CFM has been stable. The Sunon runs at 22dBA.

If I experience any issues such as shut downs or high temps, I have another fan on standby - It is the following:
Sunon 40 x 40 x20mm 3 or 4 pin fan # KDE1204PKVX
http://www.coolerguys.com/840556029854.html
This model is rated for 10.2 CFM and runs at 27 dBA, which is an improvement from the stock 35dBA.

Thank you very much for all your help and advice in getting my project started! I also bought the soft silicone mounting tabs and now completely understand how the grill gets in the way of the proper install. I also managed to wedge the fan between the board and the PSU case - although it is not a perfectly tight install, it seems perfectly fine for a server that generally stays put. BTW, the stock screws were too small for the Sunon fans, so I was not left with an option of using those -> hence using the silicone tabs that I wasn't 100% happy with the fitment.

Well after all the labor and frustration, I reassembled and switch on the power - WOW!!!!!!
I must say that it makes a HUGE difference. I know the term noise / quiet is relative, but I can almost guarantee that anyone would notice this difference

I am probably the happiest guy at this very moment.

My wife also came into the room and was shocked at how quiet the server actually became. Before we could hear the server from about 20 feet away. Now, I only hear the HD read/write sounds a lot more than anything else and only when pretty close up.

This has to be one of the best $ ever spent on a mod.

Thanks again - Just wanted to share my joy!

Glad to see everything worked out for you (and that you didn't get electrocuted while soldering!).

Let me know if you have problems with the fan not always starting up on power up, this is something I haven't resolved yet. I'm thinking I just installed a defective fan but I'll have to swap out the fan again to find out. It happens so rarely (about half of the power failures that outlast the UPS) that I just live with it so far...

Cheers,
Ben.

I have exhanged the PSU fan on my EX475 two weeks ago with the SilenX iXtrema Pro 40mm 14dBA with Fluid Dynamic bearings
This job was not too difficult, when you have already opened the EX475 for additional RAM.
I have used a 9V battery on the fans to find out the correct polarisation and wiring to the PSU

The noise now is a very big difference compared with the original fan.
I have the EX475 on my desk, about one meter away from me.
Now I forget the server is even there.
No problems with starting up or heat in the server.

I had already exhanged the two original Seagate 500Gb drives with two WD Green Caviar 1Tb drives.
This made the EX475 also much more quite.

I am very enthousiastic about this.

I guess my issue is that due to my location, I am more concerned about temperatures versus noise. I live in the desert and temps in the summer are above 100 degrees. The noise from the machine has never really bothered me.

You can look at this post on WeGotServed for a description of what to expect. You need to cut two wires and solder new ones to those (or solder a new 3-pin connector) inside the PSU.

Remember, PSUs are a dangerous place to mess into, even when they're disconnected... If you need a guide to do this, you probably shouldn't do it yourself; ask your local PC-modder
