I have a gigabit switch using Cat 6 Ethernet but my average transfer rate to/from my server is 8-15 KB/s. Server connection trace: modem > router > switch - Server.

Any help?

Welcome to the forum. :encore:

Those are indeed very slow rates. A couple things to try to see if they work:

1. Reboot server, modem, router and client PCs.

2. Replace ethernet cables to eliminate a defect in cable.

3. Plug the MSS ethernet cable into a different port on your router or switch. Do same for client PC after MSS and if still slow.

3. Is the slow transfer just between the MSS and client PC or do you also experience slow transfer rates for files going from client PC to client PC?

If after trying all of the above and the transfer is slow all the way around on all machines, then I'd suspect an issue with you router. You might try connecting the MSS via ethernet cable directly into your client PC (taking the router, switch and everything else out of the chain) and see what transfer rate you get.

I tried switching ports in the switch, hooking up straight to the router (which is not gigabit) and hooking straight to my PC. It may be the type of transfer I am doing (Redirecting source of Documents file). I am now up to 30kbs.

I did a drag & drop transfer and reached 120 mbs but it settled to 20 mbs. That is much better but still slow considering what a gigabit switch is supposed to offer.

Does the client PC also use a gigabyte NIC?

I think it's the type of operation you are doing, if it works faster for large single file copies. I'm not sure what "redirecting source of Documents file" means.

I wish that were the case but I am drag & dropping folders in the server today and am getting 20-50 KB/s average transfer rate. At one point it was in the bytes! Occasionally I will see a transfer rate in the single digit MBs.

It seems it is just the transfer to the MSS. Transfering from MSS or from computers I get 20-50MBs.

Any ideas? It's kind of annoying to take an 30-60 minutes for small transfers

Is your server doing anything else? What Add-Ins do you have installed? Does the behavior change with many small files vs individual large files? Even when my server is doing something else I still see >10MB/sec.

Any anti-virus software that mightbe slowing it down in that particular direction of travel?

No anti-virus running. I frequently get annoying Mcafee warnings about that too. I have 2gig of ram as well.

Add-ins:
Twonky Media Server
McAfee Total Protection Service
MSS Online backup

Single folders transfers to MSS tend to get 10-20MB/s initially but fall to <1MB/s usually. Multiple folder transfers (when dragging my media collection) get 150kbs at best. I do have a second hard drive installed and have it set up to mirror. That shouldnt cause such slow transfers though.

Mapping from the Windows Task Manager shows the transfer flowing around 1%. The initial surge it gets to 12%.

Streaming media from the server on the web is extremely slow as well. PC - PC transfers are 10MBs+

I'd probably try uninstalling and/or disabling those Add-Ins just to see if it makes a difference.

I just uninstalled them and didn't reinstall. Server & PC rebooted.

Copy to or from MSS seems like a hit or miss on transfer rates. Sometimes its in the low KBs, sometimes higher KBs (200-500). Rarely do I see constant 10+MBs. Usually if it hits that speed at all it trails down to <1MBs. Yesterday I just let it sit to copy 26GB. It still wasn't done when I returned 11 hours later.

Streaming is also slow. Just right clicking on pictures to preview is as slow as an old school Mac (no offense to Mac fans). It takes 5-10 seconds to toggle between pictures most times. I found when I select a group of pics to preview it is faster though. Streaming from the web is slower.

Surely something simple is causing these hang ups. It was faster when I was running an old Pentium III as a server

I'd probably try to simplify the equation even more. Disconnect router from the internet, and just have the server and PC connected. Make sure both are freshly rebooted. Disable any antivirus or firewall software on the PC. Make sure all add-ins are uninstalled on the server. Watch CPU load on PC and server.

How is your home network set up? What are your WHS ip address and your computer's ip, your gateway's internal IP? Are they public or private?

In some cases it's possible that all your data is routed thru your internet connection instead of straight LAN connection. If your ip addresses are public, I advice to setup NAT instead of bridged connection on your modem / router. That should fix the problem and it also adds some security.
