Does anyone have any idea why my EX470 keeps shutting down when i am trying to reinstall the HP MediaSmart Server software ??? All the fans are working and (as far as i know) the system is not overheating. The hard drive is the standard one that was in there. No other drives are there at all. This is doing my head in !! :-k Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Any other modifications to the MSS, i.e. upgraded processor? Are all drive trays installed (they help with keeping airflow at it's optimum)?

What's the reason for re-installing WHS on the server drive? At what point in the process is it shutting down?

Thanks for the quick reply Texas-Hansen. It has been upgraded to the AMD 64 bit processor and 2Gb ram. All the drive trays are in. It shuts down not long after the software starts loading from cd. I'm using a USB DVD/R/W on the third one USB socket down at the rear and adjusted the BIOS to IDE and not RAID (otherwise, the DVD will not boot). I had to get a new (identical) hard drive as the old one had bad blocks on it.

BIOS must be set to RAID, I recommend you load defaults in the BIOS.

I agree with Alex on putting bios back to default of RAID and take the DVD drive out of the mix during the re-install. Let us know what happens. If you still have problems, it might be the upgraded processor. I experienced a similar issue in that regard.

I cannot take the DVD drive out of the mix, as that has the reinstallation DVD in it !!!

Uhmm, I didn't know you could use the Server Recovery disk in a DVD drive directly attached to the MSS to do a factory reset or server recovery. Why not put the server recovery disk in a client PC and do the re-installation that way?

The Server Recovery disk is meant to be installed from a network connected Client PC, it will not work on the server.

Well, thank you peep's; it don't keep shutting down now when installing :) . I could not get it to install from the DVD USB player, direct to the WHS #-o I do not see how i can reinstall the OS to the WHS by using the sis 191 from the boot screen. Surely, the OS has already needed to be installed to get online to my network ?? :-k Unless there is a secret way of doing it. I have, however, installed Windows Server 2003 on it and am now running a web site from there. The only thing that is a bit of a bind, is, only the three lights at the bottom of the tower are working but no hard drive lights are on. Anybody know how i can resolve this ? or is this a new thread ?

SteffJay,

You cannot and do not install the WHS OS on the MSS via a DVD drive connected directly to the MSS. Installing WHS on the MSS is very easy to do. You put the cd labeled "Server Recovery Disc" that came with the HP MediaSmart into the cd/dvd drive of a PC connected to your network that the MSS is also connected to. Make sure that PC is running a 32 bit OS. The disk will start up and take you step by step through the process of doing a factory restore (installs the WHS OS on the MSS and wipes clean all drives and dat) or a server recovery (installs the WHS OS but keeps all data on drives intact). Make sure you chose the correct option for what you want to do. In about 45 minutes to an hour, it will be done and you'll be up and running. Be patient through the entire process as it takes time to download all the updates, etc.

Thank you Texas-Hansen. When i purchased the EX470, there were no instructions on how to do a reinstallation of the OS to the MMS. That certainly explains a lot. \:D/ Kudos to you Sir !!! :whs:

HP has online documentation for this, we have a Wiki article on it and if you insert the Server Recovery DVD into a PC it will autorun and also has instructions on how to do this.
