I keep seeing people complain about the 485/487's not supporting multiple eSATA drives from the eSATA port on these models. While looking around I found this site that offers a solution I thought might answer these concerns.

http://www.cooldrives.com/sahub5muussi.html

SS-3726HUB 1-to-5 SATA2 Port Multiplier

Sata Multiplexer SATA HUB SATA Port Multiplier

# 1-to-5 Native SATA2 Port Multiplier
# Provides an eSATA host and 5 eSATA Device Connectors
# Built-in Silicon Image SiI3726 Chip, supports FIS-based and command-based switching SATA host controllers.
# Advanced data aggregation architecture for ultra-fast read and write operations with FIS-based switching controllers.
# High-speed, native SATA connection to host and devices.
# Provides link and activity LED connectors.
# Provides a DC Jack for DC Power Input

Since it has it own chipset wondered how it would relate to the OS on the MSS?

Don't waste your money. That is just a SIL3726 portmultiplier which is the same unit in the Sans Digital TR4M enclosure. Port multipliers are useless unless they are recognized by the host controller. In this case the host controller on the ex485/7 doesn't support portmultipliers and on the ex475/7 recognizes only 4 of the 5 possible drives on a SIL3726.

Thanks for the fast response. I wasn't ready to purchase this as I still have an open drive bay in my 485. Just offering it up for comments, which you responded to.

So far after one week of ownership all is well other than a few issues with my GF's Acer Aspire not backing up either manually or automatically at night. Gets a backup error saying Hard drive failure or ??

That and not being able to sign on to the console other than as administrator. Off to search through the forum for solutions.

This has been a great resource by the way. Used if for a few days when researching for a home server solution.

Thanks

You will not be able to log into the console as anything other than administrator. There should be no need for anyone other than the administrator to access the console. Once in the console, a person could change the rights of all users, which you do not want to happen.

Is the Acer laptop connected to a power supply at night? This could be the problem why it is not backing up. If not, try connecting the machine to its power supply and see if the backup fails.
