In order to hook up a monitor to your MSS, you'll need one of these: (Gen2) HP MediaSmart Server VGA/PS2/Serial Cables

Why? The HP MSS wasn't designed for this. You won't have the drive extender, backup or duplication functionality of WHS.

Thanks for the info.
As far as why, Well even though the MSS is not desigend to act as a real server the size of it makes it just right for me to run in my small Biz out of my house. As Far as drive extender well 2008 has Raid and backup can done with NTbackup also part of 2008, Media sharing, web host and streaming all part of 2008.,

First, kculm, welcome to the world of MSS/WHS. Goot to have you aboard.

I believe this has been done, but with very mixed results -- such as the lights not working, etc. You can probably find a reference on this board by using the SEARCH function -- I have not bookmarked any of that.

It is my recollection that there was not a lot of enthusiasm for the results and that a number of folks who tried it (or were going to try it) backed out of the effort. (There was a slightly more successful effort for Linux as I recall.)

I think if you want to go to using Windows 2008 you should build or purchase a machine designed more for that instead of the WHS. Though reliable at times if you are trying to use some of the more advanced server options out there that you mentioned you'll want to use a custom machine. I think you'll find the hardware on the hp boxes limiting and if you tinker to much you'll loose support.

I'm guessing you are referring to software raid because there are no hardware raid controllers on these MSS since they were never designed to do it.
In this case it actually makes it weak.
I understand that the unit looks great and compacted very well, but from what I do for a living, I have seen many of these chassis fail.

Good job getting 2008 on there. =;
Good luck keeping it that way. :-$

Many RAID options provided via the BIOS are what is commonly referred to as "Fake RAID", not true hardware RAID.

Well After testing Windows Small Business Server 2008 and seeing that it will work on the EX487 ( keep in mind that I upgraded the CPU to an E5400 and the Memory to 4gigs)including Exchange 2007 and forefront. I was very happy with the little black box. The only down side so far is that it takes about 3.5 min. to boot and a good 9min to shut down. Once it is running it runs fast and clean.

Well with all of that being said I am now going to take one of my hard drives and just install Server 2008 ENT. and see how that runs.

I hope I am not boring any one with my post/

Keep the updates coming, doing this has been on my mind for quite a while. The sole reason I haven't done this already is because it's really disappointing to run a Windows server without RAID10.

This is why I would not do this with an MSS. http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Proliant-DL380-G ... 286.c0.m14 They have them far cheaper on ebay as well.

You are asking too much from that little box and it will eventualyl disappoint you. There are better and cheaper options out there that are designed for what you are trying to do. Just my 2 cents.

Way to big for my room.

Well I thank you for the input, and I know this is not the best way to do this but I am having fun with it. I know for the money I put into this so far with the price of the MSS w/2 750 and then the one I added pluse the CPU and Memory upgade. Not counting Windows 2008 and Exchange 2010 ( I am using 120 day Evaluation) I could buy a purpose built box, but what would be the fun in that . I work all day with high end servers that do the same thing day after day. It is fun to come home and see just how far I can push this little box..

Latest Post..

Server 2008 run better then I hoped. I hade to fight to get Exchange 2010 instaled not to the MSS but due to a bug with IPV6 and Exchange 2007 and 2010.

I only have two real issuse left. One when I shut down with in windows 2008 the OS shuts down but the MMS stays on.

Two the Helth LED on the Face Blinks (Blue) All the time.
