TracyB, you have to rewire all those shuttle power supplies, I know of nothing being offered that is MSS compatible.

erail, thank you. From your earlier posts I understood that re-wiring is required. I just wanted to know if the PSU from newegg would work (fit in the case, etc.) I just want to make sure I order a PSU that can be made to work with re-wiring.

TracyB, Yes it should work, but if you are going to do the work of rewiring, I would get a shuttle 250 or 300 watt unit. I believe they are the PC-40 or 50 and/or their replacements.

erail, I can't find a pc-40 psu. All the places I've checked have it as discontinued or out of stock. Also, most hits for a pc-40 show a FSP200-50PLA instead. Can you tell me why you recommend the pc-40 over the FSP unit? As long as the FSP unit will work I think I'll have to go with it. Am right in that the two major requirements for the new PSU are that the unit fit in the MSS and that you can re-wire the P1 connector so that it has the right wires for the MSS? Is there anything else to worry about?

Nothing I see to worry about. I just like the extra wattage of the PC-40 or 50. Here is one on ebay, it really is a PC-50. 300 watt.

Thanks erail. I went ahead and ordered the FSU200-50PL because it was a 200W unit just like the original. I'm probably being too cautious but I don't think I will ever need more power for my MSS. I just want the thing running again.

BTW, do you have any idea of how many MSS owners have successfully replaced their PSUs? I'm just curious. I don't know how common it is for the PSU to fail. In my case I have no other options but to try this. HP will not help because it is out of warranty (I have even offered to pay them). And they will not sell me the replacment PSU. I am NOT an happy HP camper right now. But if I can get my MSS running again without thier help my mood should improve.

PS failures used to be rather rare. They are, unfortunately, becoming much more common. I don't have numbers...

Hi,

I came across this forum as my MSS has died. My PSU has gone bang I think and it 's out of warranty. I finally managed to get to speak to a support guy at HP after numerous phone calls and being passed around. They cannot fix my PSU but will sell me a refurbished model for £270 with a three month warranty. It seems ridiculous that they can't sell me the PSU.

So having read through this excellent forum, has anyone successfully changed their PSU and have they got the pin-outs needed to change the connector ? Any help would be appreciated as I had my itunes, firelfly and squeeze centre all running on my MSS, it is the media hub for the house !!

Thanks.

Mak

Welcome to :mss:

You're in luck. Some of the forum members have developed an excellent "how to" article to replace the PSU. Here are some helpful links. Good luck.
