I found this forum via google. I usually find forums with regards to anything I am interested in and learning and this seems to be such a place.
I am happy with my new ex487 and expect to learn a lot from this site

I, too, found thru Google. I had seen a reference (can't remember where) to HP's MediaSmart Servers and, being in the market for a server, I Google'd to find our more.

I have had my ex487 for a couple of weeks. Seems to be doing everything it should (except the Media Collector missed about half the files?).

Essentially the same here. I did find this place (and a few others devoted to various NAS) via Google in the course of researching a NAS purchase and joined before buying an EX-485. Having a good forum for a product like this is a must, these days, and I always do a search for "<whatever> forums". Even though HP support is supposed to be better than most of the competing NAS products, I prefer being able to see what owners are doing in terms of resolving problems, taking advantage of features and adding new features.

Hi All, I found this forum on Google while researching the HP MS ex485. After purchasing it, I now come here for more info, latest news and have asked for help in the forums. I've been putting together my own version of an entertainment center for 3 years and things have really come together in the last 3 months!! I consider it somewhat of a hobby as I like exploring new technologies and putting them to use in my home.

Welcome to the gang coldstream. I particularly like the Sony Bravia screenshot which shows a baby as the background yet a Coors Light commercial being played in the right corner

Hi guys I saw a post on Engadget about the 485 and looked up Mediasmart server and would up here.
I was previously running a Maxtor Central Axis for backup. It was supposed to have a media server, but I could never seem to get it to work right.

Anywho that is my story. Right now I'm converting all my video files to .mp4. I love having a little bit of horsepower in the media server. :mss:

Hi to all!

Wow, I've been lurking for a year! At least that's what I gather by looking at my backups. We've had an HP MSS for just over 1 year. Actually I visited this site many times before we bought the MSS since I was following the corruption bug/solution.

Hello,
I found this site through the We Got Served Forums.

I'm glad I found this site, as it is specifically tailored to the HP MSS.

When diagnosing a fault on an HP M2727 AIO printer, I was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of home networking. I had already had a DSL Internet service and wanted the simplicity of having two home computers speak to each other and share a printer. As it turned out the printer dropped the LAN address and locked up due to a board fault. The printer was swapped out by HP in a heartbeat! ;}. The experience nudged me into the realm of a network backup solution. I thought I'd nail this one down for $150.00 easily. Then I started to read the user comments at all the usual places and enjoyed that curious phenomona of being dissatisfied with my NAS backup solution before I actually had one! Then, the whole business of streaming a movie through a computer or server in another room eventually got me around to the HP MediaSmart Connect device. I actually fell through the door backwards to get here since MediaSmart is the trigger for both the Connect and the Server devices. Once I locked onto the MediaSmart Server as my goal, I learn that the 470 series are not supported like the 480 series and the 480 series have problematic master hard drives from Seagate and that only a fool would buy the 487 2 drive model because it is overpriced for what you get. I learned how to get a server to negotiate the formatting a a new hard drive and I learned how the server manages the files. I learned that the software will not store anything called temp, and that may be a problem. I learned that there is such a thing a USB connected jbod storage tower that will mate with a MediaSmart device. I'm sitting at home with 10 separate external HDD's ;{. I learned that I may be able to stream a video wirelessly, but not a hi def video wirelessly. I am thankful that this resource exists and that there are good people working it with everyone's best intentions at heart. I love the fact that there is no flaming and other immature conduct. This is probably owing to the cost of the devices and the fact that many of you readers have trod the well travelled gravel to finally get and appreciate what HP is delivering. I STILL haven't pulled the trigger on one yet, but every day I seem to avoid another trap that I would hve fallen into, were I not here first.

Respectfully
Glenn Mitchell

Glenn, nice post! Glad to have you here. I love my MSS and what it does for me. I know you will feel the same. Keep on asking questions and get the MSS when you feel you have asked enough. Welcome to the world of MediaSmartServer.net :mss:

I saw a demo cage at a doomed Circuit City and it sparked my interest in the possibility of building a functional unit out of it. In the process of finding out that wasn’t going to happen soon, I saw that this site seemed to hold more info on usage than the rest. Pretty soon I had to have one, so I bought an HP refurbished 470, added 2G ram and two 1.5TB drives. My dual core should be here by the end of the week and I hope that goes in well. I find it odd that so many people even have these things, let alone tear them apart the first chance they get. :P
I doubt I would have bought a stock 47X if this site hadn’t made improving it look doable, and right now I just can’t spring for a new 48X, so it certainly influenced my decision to buy. All I use it for is a file server and backup though. I am completely ignorant of everything else that can be done with it yet, so I have much to learn.
