After looking at the hardware blog and seeing the CPU info, I looked on the Intel site and the following CPU's should work, but the big question is will the board and or bios support a faster cpu, or even teh power supply handle the additional load Another problem is on the Intel S-Spec page there is no SLAE9 cpu listed, so based on Conroe code name, the buss speed 800mhz, socket LGA775, 65nm core size, I am in no way saying this is 100% guarenteed to work.

http://ark.intel.com/sspecqdf.aspx

This is what is probably in the 485/7 since I cant find a SLAE9
Code Name # Cores Brand Processor Number Speed GHZ Cache FSB / QPI SPEC Litho

The biggest challenge with CPU upgrades on the EX48x is that aside from what's already in the MSS, there are no ~35-45Watt (TDP) chips available for the LGA775 socket.

There may be more low TDP cpus released in the future but for the moment there just aren't any good candidates for a cpu upgrade.

Count me in looking for a processor upgrade as well..

I love the form factor of the EX485, works great with utorrent, streaming to the popcorn hour and boxee media center, and works perfectly with time machine for the macs in the house, but extracting rars and doing some minor media conversions takes foreverrrrrrrrrrr...

This should probably be in another thread but, Extracing rar files on my machine seems pretty damn quick, I have my newreader from my xp machine save the rar on my ex485, then once done i check the files with PAR and then extract the rar files on the ex485 via RDP. What else is running?

I beg to differ: bottom of the first page on the Intel link is the lower power dual core 3GHz Xeon L3110, which I can find retail best price of just over $250. Questions are: will it work? is it worth it? I'll be finding out, by hook or by crook. And, BTW, it's a 45 W part, the only multi-core LGA775 processor with that low a TDP (most of the rest are 65 W or higher).

I'm a bit skeptical that the L3110 would actually work... The higher rated 45W cpus didn't work out that well in the EX47x either.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if the L3110 worked reliably in the EX48x

I am unsure if it will work or not, but I still plan to try anyway. Right now, it appears to be the only dual-core LGA775 chip that's anywhere close to the right thermal/power envelope. The BE-2350 I have running in my EX475 right now is also rated at 45W, which is the only thing that gives me hope that it *might* actually work. We will see, though, we will see!

Thanks for sharing your point of view: much appreciated.

Not yet, but I plan to undertake them before the end of this month. Stay tuned, and please: be patient. The paying work (and customers) comes first, with my apologies.

According to the Intel specs for this CPU (http://ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupId=30781) the TDP for this chip is 65 W as is typical for many of the desktop Core 2 Duo versions. Most of my attempts to use any chips with higher than 45 W TDP (both Intel and AMD, where I'm obviously dealing with 47* models when AMD is involved) have not worked in this box; only those with TDP of 45W and under have run for any length of time at all. I'm only confident in predicting, in fact, that the odds are better than even with chips rated at 35W or lower.

Hence my curiosity and determination to obtain and try out a Xeon L3110, which is indeed rated at 45 W TDP and does socket 775. I just wish it didn't cost $247!!

Looking around on Google, I see you can pick up an E4500 for about $120. If you're game to try this out, I'd also hope you'd post your results here. But please do understand that prior experience teaches me that your odds of making this work are under 50%, perhaps even under 30%. I'm not sure I'd spring $120 (plus S&H, and perhaps sales tax) on such odds myself... If you just happen to have one laying around, though, it might make an interesting experiment.

HTH,

Hi:

I just upgraded my new HP EX-485 server CPU. It's an Intel Dual-Core E5200 (2.5GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache) - $69.99 with free shipping at Newegg.com). All is working fine with no issues to report.

See pics here: http://www.mediasmarthome.com/forum/thread/11977/HP-EX-485-CPU-upgrade-sucessful/

Hope this helps!

Marcos

Wow! Congrats... Can you confirm stability by doing some stress testing with OCCT or Orthos?

Maybe I'll have to pick up an EX48x someday afterall.

I'll be away for the weekend but I'll report some more on Tuesday.
What temps are you getting with the original Celeron CPU?

Thanks.
