Changed controller ahci/ide/raid in bios, installed from usb-cd, using a Linksys USB200m NIC.

SWEET! I'm glad my cable helped. Any chance in posting all the steps you took to get this working? There may be some very useful information that other (Linux) guys can walk away with. You may also find some of the stuff here useful as well.

It's not so much to write about the installation, it's straightforward, anyone able to install windows can manage to install FreeNAS.

What i did. Changed the controller card setting in bios from 4P(IDE)4S(Raid) to 4P(IDE)2S(IDE) which is IDE emulation due to
FreeNAS which did not recognize the disks, therefore using IDE emulation.
Booted FreeNAS-i386-LiveCD-0.7.4519.iso (Nightly build) from a Samsung SE-S224Q USB-DVD.
(HPEX470 did not boot from a bootable USB stick that i created)

The FreeNAS 0.7.4519 is very buggy, and i was prepared for it thou.

First thing during installation;

GUID Partition Table failed. And it used the first partition only, (250GB).

Why i choosed this FreeNAS Testing branch is because my Linksys USB200m is not recognize in FreeNAS stable branch, based on FreeBSD 6.4.

During my testing period i found so many bugs that i'm consider installing a stable Linux distribution instead.
I love FreeNAS, but do not know if i could wait for a stable release due to 1TB storage that need to move...

I will evaluate FreeNAS during today and see what i will do...

Cheers!

Speaking to myself here :P ..

I'll keep FreeNAS, it is awsome. i'll manage to hold on for the 7 stable branch.

Configured it OK now, backed up configuration.

I'll post more detailed info later on ..

I've been keeping an eye on the freenas .7 branch since I've had my ex470... I had an earlier i386 build working but since my interest in it is due to its zfs support, I've been focusing on the amd64 builds (ZFS really benefits from the extra ram and the 64bit architecture).

Sadly though the amd64 builds all cause a kernel panic on my ex470 hardware when I have the usb keyboard plugged in. Also the amd64 (nightly) builds are generally few & far between -- a more recent amd64 nightly build is provided in the freenas forums by forum member timaslat (here).

Thanks for the link, but i'm holding on to i386 because i'm using the UFS filesystem... Nexenta do have ZFS filesystem, seems nice.

I've seen nexenta but haven't tried it...

My biggest show-stopper with opensolaris has been that its grub bootloader doesn't work with usb-cd/dvd drives. The secondary issue is that it doesn't have freenas's slick webui or no-nonsense flash booting.

For comparison, NexentaStor's (the commercial storage product of nexenta) recommended configuration is two mirrored drives for the system + storage pool drives.

Things could turn around for me re:opensolaris if they ever got down to getting RaidZ Booting working -- I'd actually put a little more time in working around the grub/usb limitation.

Sarcasm, indeed  . I'm installing Ubuntu server edition on my HP now. Need faster read/write performance.

So you've got gigabit working in ubuntu? (vs freenas?)

No, just 100mb. Using UDMA33 on my disk in FreeNAS is a bit slow, moving files betweeen the internal disks.

Now i have better read/write in Ubuntu. Checked with hdparm & time dd ..

That's good news but without gigabit is it worth the effort vs WHS? Do you know if you had gigabit working under FreeBSD/NAS?

Absolutely, it's worth the effort, i have 4 other boxes running Linux/BSD at home so i do not need WHS, you could think that it's dumb to buy this with WHS installed and the price paid, when i could build my own cheaper, but i like the formfactor on HP EX470 it's awsome. The Gigabit did not work under FreeBSD 7.x. ( I do not have any box with Windows at home, and will not in the future. )
