Sans Digital makes an 8-drive USB tower that might interest you.

Alex will all 8 drives be seen with one USB cable to the EX470? This is interesting and I would like to order today. One other question. If I want to start with 8Tb of internal storage should I also start with 8Tb of USB storage as backup? Basically this way later when I need more storage I can add a eSata 4 Drive enclosure and just add the same amount of drive in the usb backup enclosure. And lastly if a drive in the backup enclose goes bad is it easy to repopulate the new drive with the lost data? Trying to get my head around how this technology works. Thanks

As the specifications note in the link I provided above, the enclosure supports eight drives via a single USB cable. I have not personally tested this enclosure with the MediaSmart Server but have no indications of why it would not work.

The WHS storage pool is a single volume, and thus is limited to 16TB. However you choose to attach drives, if you add them to the pool they become available for storage and duplication. In the event of a lost drive, as long as Duplication is enabled on the share WHS will automatically migrate and duplicate the data to ensure it is always available on more than one physical disk.

I suggest you read the Drive Extender whitepaper to learn in more detail how this works, since you seem technically minded and curious about the technology.

As for storage, I suggest you initially set up your server with as much storage as you need plus some reasonable amount to grow, not necessarily max it all out right away just because you can. This leaves you room to grow as needed.

Yes and it is cheaper in the end as i found out. I maxed everything out and got some good prices on 750GB drives at the time for around $130 each. Well I ended up replacing all those with 1TB drives at around $95 each and now the 2TB drives are coming out so here I go again.

draftik,

the Addonics MST5X1PM is a four drive mini-tower that comes with a 5 to 1 port multiplier installed. The 5th port is not recognized by the MSS through eSATA. They also only include four SATA cables and power cables in the case. As an FYI, on my first unit, I did try to connect a SATA to eSATA backplate onto the case to use the last port to see if I could get one more drive connected to the MSS and it did not work.

Since the tower only holds four 3.5" drives I never tried to connect a fifth drive to the PM under USB to see if it connects.

Why not just build your own WHS if you are going to do that many connections? With the number of drives I ended up with I should have done that.

All of the reports said these things were going to appear this week. Well, this week is almost over and I haven't seen one yet. I guess we'll just have to wait a little longer.

Why do so many people keep asking this question? :werd: It's no different than the 1 TB WD drives except for the size (2 TB).

Maybe because of the problems people are having with the 1.5TB Seagate which is basically no different to the 500GB and 1TB drives except for the size?

Sorry...couldn't resist...

Kind regards,

Lara Jones, WHS Team Member, said that 1.5TB drives will NOT work in WHS. I was personally told this in a phone conversation with her. I am guessing she would also make a similar statement about 2TB drives. Why is she saying this? Is she right?

I thought I had read somewhere on this forum that some folks were already using 1.5TB drives in a WHS server as part of the data pool, but I don't seem to be able to find the thread where this was discussed using the search term "1.5TB". Has anyone successfully added at 1.5TB drive to the data pool? The max size I have is a 1TB drive. Of course, we all know they work fine. I wonder what the limitation is on 1.5TB drives that Lara was talking about? We were covering so many subjects I forgot to stop her and ask her why she thinks a 1.5TB drive would NOT work in WHS.
