WHS doesn't come with an FTP server built in, you could add one via Remote Desktop if you liked...

the version of IIS included with WHS does not install FTP by default.
You can install it if you log on as the administrator -

To install the FTP service

From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
From the left pane, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
From the Components list, click Application Server, and then click Details.
From the Subcomponents of Application Server list, click Internet Information Services (IIS), and then click Details.
From the Subcomponents of Internet Information Services (IIS) list, select the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Service check box.
Click OK.
Click Next. You might be prompted for the Windows Server 2003 family CD or the network install path.
You should be able to point to c:\windows\I386 to find any needed files.
Click Finish.

You may have to add to your router/firewall configuration to connect remotely to FTP.
Normally you need forward port 21.

You can install whatever FTP server you want on the MSS, provided it is compatible with Windows Server 2003.

I am running Bulletproof on it right now and I use that to transfer my WMV's.

I have been trying to get FTP service to run and have been unsuccessful so far. Will FTP follow user accounts? I ran FTP on a XP pro box for years and set up WHS the same way but cannot see it from the WEB. Am I missing something?

Do you have the ports forwarded? You typically need port 21 and sometimes port 20.

Yes I do, I was logged in to WHS and saw a popup asking if I wanted to unblock FTP packets...I did.. it's working now. Funny cause I added port 21 to the exclusion list

have your router forward the appropriate ports and it should work.

Yes, ftp://homeservername.com would be the URL to access the server via internet explorer or a ftp client.

I've been trying to set up an FTP server as well since I sometimes transfer large files and don't like the fact that HTTP transfers lack error correction. I've enabled the FTP service as specified above, and have tried to install a couple different servers (including Bulletproof), but WHS won't let me. I've copied the install app to the shared folder than logged into WHS via RDC and tried both running the install from the shared folder, as well as copying it to the WHS desktop and running it from there, and each time, I'm confronted with a window that says

How do I install the server software?

You just need to unblock the file, so right click on it first, choose properties and choose Unblock.

is there a benifit to using FTP software above enabling it on the MSS. I mean is there any benifit to using diffrent ftp server software? Im on the verge of getting internet and want to set this up. Im also thinking about hosting a little website. do I need a subdomain for FTP?
