WD to launch 2TB hard drive this week
Western Digital is on the verge of launching a record-setting hard drive, according to a tip sent to Fudzilla. Corroborated by a store listing, the leak hints at a Caviar Green model, the WD20EADS, that should top 2TB using and double the capacity of the drive maker's current line. The Green label will be earned through a power-efficient design that winds down to 5,400RPM from the normal 7,200RPM under lower demand.
The SATA disk should otherwise have the same 32MB of cache as other models and a standard 8.9ms average seek time for data. A specific release date isn't revealed, though Western Digital is believed ready to launch the 2TB drive as early as this week. Pricing isn't available, though estimates put the cost between approximately $210 and $240.

Sweet! I just recently increased the storage space of my EX475 to 4TB, so it'll be awhile before I need to buy one of these new 2TB drives. Hopefully by then the price of the WD will be down to the current price of the 1.5TB Seagate.

So who here is going to get the 2TB drives as soon as they come out?

I have 3 bays left on my TR4M, so I would be tempted to get 1 2TB drive to test out, and hopefully by the time I need more the prices will have come down. I would be a little hesitant to buy right away after all the problems Seagate had with their 1.5TB upon release.

I am so STOKED....

I just threw a 500gb that I had laying around to get me by for a couple of weeks and now this is on the horizon. I am popping for one of these as soon as it comes out. I have 2 of the 1TB GP in my EX470 right now.

This new drive will work in the server right?????

Why do so many people keep asking this question? :werd: It's no different than the 1 TB WD drives except for the size (2 TB).

There used to be lots of problems with some BIOS not being able to see drives larger than a certain size. I remember 128GB was a big threshold for a while where lots of motherboards needed an update to recognize the drive. Some mobo manufacturers decided not to release BIOS updates for their older boards, which left a lot of consumers in a bad spot.

I agree that 2TB drives should work fine, but that's probably why so many people are asking about it.

If I use these drives only (replacing the one that comes with it) how many can I hook up to the EX470 vs. the EX 485. I'm trying to decide between the 2. This should include the ability to add a esat port multiplier in the EX470 and not in the EX485. And include the Max USB drives allowed. Also this should take into account any MSS max allowed.

I want to get the new one but only if I can get the max data storage with it. I want one system with all my movies and an attached backup solution.

I'll replace my 1TB drives with the 2TB drives and just drop my 4 Bay USB box.

Internal Drives + external SATA drives:
  • EX470: 8 drives (4 internal + 4 external)
  • EX485: 5 drives (4 internal + 1 external)
USB is a different animal. You have 4 x USB ports and each USB port can chain up to 127 devices, iirc, so that's a lot of disk. However, USB bus speed is likely to be a limiting factor there that makes USB mostly infeasible for any sort of i/o intensive task.

Also, keep in mind that, due to the 32-bit nature of the OS, the maximum storage capacity of WHS is 16TB, period, regardless of how many devices you have. (I believe you can have more storage space, but not part of the WHS-managed storage pool. Only as separate partitions that are not WHS aware) So, with that + the 8 drive capacity of the EX470, I'd say that fills you up right there.

Thanks thats exactly what I was looking for. What If I wanted 16TB of Storage Drives (SATA) and 16 TB (USB) of Backup drives. Is this possible with the EX470?

What I'm asking is if I max out the 4 Internal and 4 eSata (multiplier) drives with 2 TB drives. Can I also attach 16TB worth of USB drives for backup?

Yes, you could connect 16TB of USB drives.
http://www.addonics.com/products/io/aau2esa.asp

I have two extra Addonics MST5x1PMs connected to my WHS (not part of the pool), just backups of the data on the WHS, using the above device.

Ok Great I just ordered the EX470. Waiting for the 2TB drives to be released. Just one last question the 5 bay enclosure you linked above works - I mean all 5 drives are recognized via the USB port on the EX470?
Thanks again
