Look what Brown has dropped off today:

Here is the HDTune performance graph from the MSS remote console:

Here's the shot integrated into the WHS console:

Great performing drive if you look at the HDTune. These would be screamers for short stroking setups!

That's a good deal, almost exactly 50% more cost for 50% more space sompared to their price for the 1Tb Seagate. But other palces have some really wild prices on the 1.5TB drives. I saw on one site it was $299! LOL! JOKE.

how big do drives need to be when the sticker capacity is no longer displayed as Gbytes?

:)

you'd think it would save some ink at this point to write 1.5Tbytes instead of 1500Gbytes.

I have no need but i almost want to buy one- just becasue!

WESTERN DIGITAL lists their drives at 1.0TB on the drive itself (the 1TB GP drive)

I'm going to have to replace my original 7200.10 500g drive with one of these. I really like the fact that the first 500gb of the drive can do 120mb/s sustained. Hopefully one day they'll optimize the demigrator in such a way as not to cap performance.

Replacing the system drive with one of those would be the LAST thing I'd do. That's an awful lot of space to waste until all your other drives fill up. Unless there is some significant difference between the SATA drives on the MSS hardware and SATA drives on the motherboard in my home-built WHS, disk IO is far from the limiting factor when it comes to moving data back and forth between my PC and the server. Demigrator I believe intentionally does not saturate the disk i/o simply so it can work and yet allow good performance with users actually using the data. Great, it rebalances a TB of data in a half hour, but during that time you can hardly copy a 50K Word document off the box. Don;t think that would fly with the general users.

What is the drive temperature when idling as shown via SMART (e.g., using Disk Management Add-In)? Under continuous load?

I checked before I left for work this morning and it was idleing at 38-39 degrees. I'll put some load to it and let you know. The 750s were at 37 and the 500 was at 40 so its within that ballpark.

Which is what I think is a weakness of the MSS config. I wish I could hook up a 150-300GB 2.5" Velociraptor as system drive and use the system drive slot for a 1.5TB drive that is actually a data drive. Is there a way to get the eSata port to be read as system drive? Because I would do it.

Well it's not THAT bad with the MSS hardware, 500GB in the system slot, not as bad as putting a 1.5TB there and not havign any of it used until every other drive filled up. I'm pretty sure the bottom slot has to be the system disk - but what's the difference if the system disk is 300GB on eSATA or there's a 1.5TB data drive on eSATA? The extra perfroamcne of the raptor drives would also be totally lost in this application - not to mention the havoc the high heat woudl play. Now if you rolled your own box. Don't forget now that with PP1 you can put stuff ont he D drive outside of the system space safely, so if you install additional applications on the server you can put them on the D drive and not fill the 20GB system partition. This is probably what I see as a weakness - even with generic WHS it does not allow you to pick the size of the C partition, it's 20GB, no choice. I wold have at least doubled that if I could - good thing I won;t need any transcoding when my PCH gets here - having TVeristy trancode a 12GB movie...oops, out of disk space on C - and running out of disk space on C: is VERY VERY bad.

Has anyone tried changing the size of the system partition AFTER the basic installation is complete (and stable)? Maybe using Partition Magic or some such? On an MSS? On a DIY WHS?

Rats, should have tried that after I built it. I am deathly afraid it will mess something up with the way the files are handled via the tombstones, and I have absolutely no way of fulling backing my system up anymore, I've filled it up with more than would fit on my desktp if I tried to copy it back. I suppose I could add in my new 1TB drives and not make them part of the pool so I can back everything up to them.
