Hello there!

When i did the memory upgrade i found a connector on the motherborad that was labeled "FAN 1"

Has anyone used that connector for a 40mm fan blowing over the cpu heatsink?

Regards Bully

I hook up a 120mm case fan to blow across it when I have the system running outside the case. You shouldn't need to hook up an additional fan to the system in normal operation.

I love that Aphex Twin album, BTW... :)

The "cpufan" will be mounted when and if i upgrade the cpu to a LE-1640.

And yes, I love that Aphex Twin album too

Where are you planning to mount the fan, just strapped to the front of the case? There's no room inside for a CPU fan. Even with the 1640 you shouldn't need additional cooling, plus the system will increase the rear exhaust fan speeds if CPU temp climbs too high.

Take pictures if/when you get it set up! 8)

I, too, would very much like to see pics if you can fit a fan in there...

And do consider getting increased air flow across the Northbridge at the same time -- it is consistently quite a bit hotter than the CPU.

Thanks for input!

There is no good reason to have to have more than a passive heatsink for the CPU in the MSS. My posts about thermal properties show that even at 100% CPU on the upgraded CPU, the heatsink alone does fine in keeping the temperature low enough.

Like yakuza said, its pretty small in there! There is no headroom which would prevent the fan from getting air through the top. No good having a fan if it cannot get air from the outside IN.
I tried a bunch of different ways to get air around the heatsink besides the air coming through from the back fans.
The headroom above the CPU is about 1 1/4 inches while the heatsink is 3 inches wide. I did have a fan (shown below) that actually fits the bill. Air comes from the outside and blows in. Just a little too big to fit inside but the small black cover could be trimmed (or just plain removed). I have no idea if you can just buy one of these as it came with my mobo.

I settled instead on a plain case fan blowing from the front. Its in my basement so who cares what it looks like!

File comment: a piece of the front plastic cut would allow room for the heatsink post to fit.

At one time I thought I was going to have to go the route of a 1U cooler

I picked up an Intel AXXUPHS heatsink as well as a Dynatron 1U cooler with a Blower fan. To use them, I would have had to get them machined to fit the MSS' non-standard/custom bolt pattern.

The Dynatron blower is also unbelievably loud but would have had the benefit of blowing air across the northbridge heatsink.

I ended up not using either either of them.

ymboc, never seen a fan like this (blade servers were after my time with HP). Looks like it is the right size height wise. Thing draws 7.58 WATTS (.63 amps) at full power. no wonder its loud!
I wonder if it is left right bias so it can pull air from the front and shoot it towards the back. I could probably machine some aluminum bar stock to align the holes.
Nah, I will just dangle the stupid case fan in front! Good idea tho!

The blower on that one looks a little bigger than the one I have but other wise pretty much the same thing. 7k RPM!

It pulls air from the bottom (through the fins) the shoots it out the side or back (depending on your model).

If I wanted something that noisy I would have bought a 1U 4Bay HotSwap SuperMicro/Tyan Barebones server. That said, I nearly did. I might have had less grief (install a quad core right out of the box) but it probably wouldn't have been as entertaining.

If I'm not mistaken, ANTEC makes one of those BLOWER FANS.

Normally, its mounted in an empty slot, and sucks hot air out of the case out the back of the slot.

I had one in all my pc junk, but I can't find it now.

Not sure if you could disassemble it from the frame to where its height would fit in the narrow space or not.

If I find if, I'll post.

Yes, but I can assure its much bigger & would never fit.
