Our WHS2011 is still working and humming along however I know it's a matter of time that it's going to have to be replaced (fan or HD noise started) and I'd rather upgrade now before I'm forced into a time crunch since we use it for our business and have employees that aces the files everyday.

What we use it for is sharing folders and files with multiple users having access to their folders or a group of folders.

We also host our Quickbooks file on the WHS2011 machine and have Carbonate installed as a backup.

We don't have a need for any client backups, webserver, streaming, etc.

Is Windows Server Essential overkill for what I need to do? I can't install Quickbooks or Carbonite on just a plain NAS, correct? Not looking for whats cheapest to setup but what easy to setup and maintain.
I read that one can just set up a Windows 10 box, create a user for each person that has to be set up for file access and create folder permissions. Not sure which way to go.

Thanks for any help.

James

You should be able to just use a nas.
I have been extremely pleased with the readynas rn316
I assume you just share the quickbooks data files from whs and install quickbooks on th pc's correct?
also carbonite states it does support baclups for a nas in some fashion.

The first thing to save is the os(Linux) is included in the readynas.
It has a nice gui frontend to manage the device, folders ,usersplugins, backups, settings, etc.

Unfortunately, In addition to the Quickbooks file, there's also a Database Manager that has to be installed on Windows PC.

It's part of the Intuit/Quickbooks software package

well I used quickbooks pro for many years and I kept the data files on the ex490 whs 1 and accessed it from multiple desktops in my local lan.
Yes a NAS is usually linux but is accessible from a windows desktop.
Now I did not have a network version of quickbooks so there would be issues when accessed from multiple pc's simultaneously .
I recall there was a warning that I need to purchase the network version.
But that was rare in my case. It only happened when I left another pc logged in. and tried another pc.

So now they have migrated to a database manager. So still doable with a desktop as you know.
You could still use a nas with a dedicated pc for the manager , either a standalone pc or one used with quicbooks.

My suggestion is I would start with windows 10 pro. It is more robust for multi users.
And you could still use a nas for down the road.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we have 5 QB networked users and if the QB file isnt managed by their database manager, it can get corrupt (as per Intuit).
I think going with a Windows10 Pro box is good for now. When we add the 5 users, I assume I would just add them as standard local accounts and then adjust their folder/file permissions accordingly?
Also, WHS2011 suggested creating the same user name and password as it is on their client PC. Should I do the same on the Win10 "server" and will it log them in automatically like WHS2011 did?

I am not sure on the auto login.
If the credentials are identical between the pc and win 10 pro.
It should prompt them the first time to save.
I have one win10 pro pc all the others are win 10 home and I never need to login to the folders that are shared for another pc but it has been set up for a few years.
I do recall I had a big update lately and had to re-share the folders. I got a forbidden error when using file explorer.
There is a new update the last two days that I keep putting off I think it is a Feature update.

In remote desktop I know it will save the login. But that gives them full access.
