My primary goal is to simulate an on premise environment where remote users can securely map the server using Windows Explorer with functionality equivalent to, or nearly equivalent to files stored on a user’s local hard drive. In doing so, users should be able to do the following:
• Click on the server from Windows Explorer;
• Access shared folders within their assigned access rights (read/write or read only) as established by the administrator;
• Launch the file into its native application by double clicking on it (ex. an Excel files should automatically open in Excel)
• Allow a user to make changes and save the changes directly back to the server with the same file name by clicking the save icon
• Preferably notify a user if the file is in use and allow the user to open as read only
• Save multiple versions of a file if there is a file conflict as a result of multiple users editing the same file at the same time

I realize WHS has remote access, which I currently have enabled; however, this requires users to download a file, save it to their local hard drive, make changes, and re-upload it back to the server, potentially having to log back in if their session expired.

If this functionality is not available with the HP Mediasmart server running WHS v1, does anyone know of a new system that can do this? I tried a Western Digital NAS (EX4100), but it doesn't have the above capability I'm looking for. Thanks for any help anyone is able to provide!

I think you would need something like MS sharepoint.
Which has migrated to office 365 server.
Or Google's G Suite

Or google docs/drive.

Thanks; so it sounds like the answer is no to using my existing HP Mediasmart server for what I'm trying to do.

Not really.
Search for alternate os systems to run on mediasmart servers.

Or wait to see if someone else has a alternative.

Here is a free office suite that may work for you.
I forgot about this one.
https://www.libreoffice.org/
Compatibility with MS Office files and more.
It has a map to network feature built in.

But this would need to be installed on the pc.
I have never tried installing it directly in the server.
