With the current issues with my EX-495 its pushing my more and more to new hardware. I have thought about either a Mac Pro, HP Gen 8, or a DIY rack mount build. My current set up is a Ex-495 with a Q9550s processor and a 5 bay san digital esata enclosure. These are the things I would like in my next machine ( give or take):

1) Equal or higher performance CPU
2) CPU Capable of multiple 1080p streams (including Audio) Needs to support x265 and 10bit
3) File server of course
4) Hot swappable HDD (I know the Gen8 doesn't support this)
5) All Drives in same case
6) Small foot print if not rack mount (have home setup to garage where my rack is)
7) Should be #1 i don't want my power bill to go thru the roof. I would like to keep power usage at around the usage of the enclosure and EX-495.

I currently use Serviio and Air Media HD to stream my media to iPhones and TV. The current processor doesn't do much stuttering if at all which is nice when watching a movie. Currently I'm having issue with remote access on WS2012e R2 but I would like remote access. Help pointing me in the right direction or suggestions on what i should do is greatly appreciated. With tax time coming up i should have a little extra coin to make something decent if not nice.

Sorry I just noticed that this was duplicated.

I currently have the MSS and a 5 bay esata enclosure with 4 drives. I would love to have more capacity but how big i should go I have no idea. I do like this unit: http://www.origenae.co.kr/en/htpc_s21t.htm. This way it could sit out with my other equipment. Should i been looking for something better or is this cool?

I went the other way . building a htpc and moving my data drives to it and I went with a silverstone grandia gd09 case holds 12 drives total then added a esata port and using win 10.
Then just use the ex490 for backups.
This lets me use bigger drives per sata port.
And the ex490 still makes backups from it.
So little by little I replace a 2tb drive with a 3 or 4tb when I need more space
I can't justify the cost of larger than 4tb at this time

Does the HTPC connect to multiple tvs via hdmi or do you use another device at the other end? Can I see a picture of your case? I think I can squeeze an extra drive in as a pic-e ssd system drive.

I use xbmc on the main htpc connected via hdmi to the main tv and media players connected via Ethernet to other tv's.
The case is at:
http://silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=331&area=en
In my case it was a gd 08 not gd09 as I stated before.

Ihave not updaTED MY POST FOR THE BUILD BUT IT IS:

I was looking for cases and this one says it will hold 12 with 8 of them being hot-swappable:

Thats pretty nice. I have been liking this case: http://www.origenae.co.kr/en/htpc_s21t.htm

I got a little overwhelmed with the thought of building my own server and picked up a Gen8 Microserver. The more i dug into it the more complicated it became. I can figure out complicated but the more I researched the more limiting that server seemed to become. I was able to dump it on a client of mine so no harm no foul, It will be better used in his environment then mine.

So now I'm back to figuring out how to build again.

I looked at the Gen 8 and although it has room for more cpu and ram, the price when you add it all up with a board to add more drives and then it still really didn't have enough space to hold enough drives, even though you could go with bigger 4-6 tb drives.
That is when I built the X710 in the DIY thread.
It only holds 5 drives inside (1 drive is to backup the OS which is win2012E) but I figured I could go with a 8 bay external down the road. I still am not happy with it, it still is just a test server.
I'm still looking.

Good Luck
I have always dreamed of a 490 that was twice as tall, 8 bays. But just a dream. ](*,)
