Hi All,

I have an EX490 upgraded with a E8500 CPU and it doesn't start (anymore). I have had it started with lots of trouble, half fans doing strange, I have placed the original Celeron back, and finally it booted and I was able to install it.

I have placed back another E8500 which should be OK, no start again, no fan spinup as the first E8500 did, strange.

Is the 200W PSU not powerfull enough ? I have seen when I remove all fans and backplane the PSU starts, or started... need to check now.

Any advice is welcome for this aweome machine!

Thanks,

Matt

Usually a no boot issue is due to a bad drive.
I assume you have the S.M.A.R.T. addin nstalled.
But you elate to cooling fan issues also???
I would suspect a failed PSU.
I have run a ex490 with 4 bays full with drives plus a esata with 3 drives with no issues.

It doesn't start at all, no lights (anymore) no fan spinup, nothing!

But with the Celeron it did again, need to test that again, but still that would be strange when the Celeron works and the E8500 doesn't. 2 E8500's tested.

Anyone some clue ?

Can it might be the 1333Mhz vs 800Mhz bus ?

I have tried this in another EX490, same result with different CPU's.

Are you stating that you are using a non standard stock memory also and you have issues?
If true then that could be your issue.

No, everything is stock, except the CPU.

The E8500 has a bus of 1333Mhz where I get the feeling that the difference is too big and 1066Mhz would be max.

But I'm not sure here!

perhaps you need to adjust something in your bios to get it to work properly.

Anyone some clue here or some good directions ?

I have searched everywhere. At the moment installed WHS2011 and checked the bios settings using AMIBCP but I'm not able to make settings there.

Do I need to unlock the BIOS so the CPU can be altered by the system itself ?

As lots of people have this running, even without VGA cable I would like to know how!

Thanks a lot!

Cheers,

Matt

Can anyone help me out here ?

I tried this between 4 different EX490 with 4 different CPU's with the same result, no start of the system.

What the hack goes wrong here ? And I'm no HW 00b :(

OK update!

Something I was hoping and worked. I installed earlier WHS2011 using an E5300. After all my opgrades I installed the E8500 again and off we go!

Wow this is FAST!
