Okay I replaced my zv5000 because it had issues staying powered up with the power supply. This was a known problem that everyone with the laptop eventually circame to.

Can I cut the cord on the DC power supply and just solder the damn thing directly to the motherboard? I honestly don't see a reason why I shouldn't be able to but I'd love a spiffy "I did exactly that and it works perfect" story. :D

Anyone tried?

Sorry, I have nothing useful to add, but I'm dying to hear how this works out should you try it. Please be safe, though!

Don't worry. I'm an electrical computer engineer too. :P I won't do anything until I've thoroughly spec'd it out with my multimeter. I've take the damn thing apart 12 times today checking various things. It works just fine... except it still doesn't charge for more then 2 min. Definitelty thinking of soldering it. I wonder if hp would give up the circuit diagram for the laptop. I doubt it though.

I have a friend that did that to his Sony. Here is a photo set of someone soldering a new jack on your laptop though. It looks fairly easy.

Yeah true. But unfortunately the 13th time wasn't the charm last night. The keyboard wasn't working so I opened it to fix it then I broke off one of the connectors for the mouse pad so now it doesn't work. I might just have to R.I.P. this laptop and call it a day. Oh well it was fun playing around it. eBay here comes a new broken laptop just for you! $25 for parts. :P
