OK, Idiot time again,

I have a netgear gigabyte wireless n router, four 1 gig ports. works well. I am in the middle of building an office room in the house, and am running cat6 wiring in the walls before the sheetrock goes back up. Most of the office stuff I am trying to hardwire, but will still need the wireless for a few laptops that will be running to far away to be wired so I need to keep the wireless n. I am looking for a router / switch ( don't know which terminology is correct ) to increase my ports from four. I am looking at a netgear GS 108 1 gig by 8 port.

If I understand correctly, one of the 8 ports is an uplink. Does that mean I can plug the uplink into my existing router and add 7 more ports to my collection?? Trying to learn this stuff and want to get it right!!

Bob

You already have a router, so, if you want more ports, you need a switch. You can add as many switches as you need to your network in the future. The Netgear GS 108 will do just fine and will give you an additional 7 ports. You will loose one on the router and one on the switch when you connect the two, so you'll have a total of 10 ports available for connections to other clients.
