Smack some butter on me cause I am on a roll today with some little projects (amazing what a little peace and quiet can do). My desktop PC is Vista x32. I have a Vista Ultimate x64 disk that I was thinking about installing on this PC over the x32 (this is not an upgrade cd so it would be a clean install). I inserted the disk and rebooted my PC. The Windows installation began and I entered in the key. Then Vista looks for the drive to install the O/S on but tells me that there is no drive present, so that is where I get stuck. I emailed Gateway to get their thoughts (this is a gateway PC), but they can be hit or miss. Wondering if anyone here had any thoughts. The PC currently has 2x500GB drives set up in RAID 0. Thanks.

If your board doesn't have the current RAID drivers built in to Vista, you
will need to load the RAID controller drivers during the Vista installation.
Instead of using the F6 method like XP, you are offered the option to "load
additional drivers" during the Vista install. With Vista you can install the
RAID drivers using a floppy, cd or USB drive containing the correct drivers
for your RAID controller. They should be available from the board
manufacturer's website.

I had a feeling that was what was causing it. I will head over to the mannys website ( I think my board is an NVidia) and see what I find. Thanks

So looks like my PC is now bricked...You were correct Still Grey, I was able to get the drivers from the mobo website and load them on a cd. The installation goes fine, and then when windows gets to the last part about finalizing the setup (about 70% complete) it just hangs. I think my options are either a) reformat the HDDs and retry to install or b) just reinstall x32 with the gateway recovery disk. Even if I just put x32 back on the PC that is fine, I was having problems with my PC and needed to do a clean install anyhow. Reason why I wanted to put x64 on my PC was to be able to use more then 3GB RAM and I have x64 on my HTPCs, so if I upgrade to W7 down the road I would just need one upgrade disk, but no biggie if I need to put that on hold for now.

Looks like some peace and quiet may not be a good thing, it gives me time to get into trouble!!!

You can also dump the RAID 0 and install Vista 64.

True, my rationale for RAID 0 was performance since I do a lot of photo and video editing. Aside from that RAID anything is not important since i have the MSS

I just decided to go ahead and do reinstall of x32 that came with the PC for now. I will have to give it some thought down the road how I want to handle when/if I decide to upgrade to W7. One interesting thing to note, accessing the WHS console of my PC has been a little sluggish, which I never really thought twice about figuring it was a limitation with the MSS. After doing a clean reinstall of x32 last night and loading up the MSS software, the WHS console now runs a lot quicker on my PC. So it appears that the sluggishness was caused by my PC and not the MSS

Glad you mentioned that Damian. I have been planning a x32 Vista Ultimate upgrade for my XP Pro machine. It's got some annoying problems. Not deal killers and that is one of the reasons I have not gone ahead. One of the annoyances is slowness with the MSS so I hope the new install will help me like it did your. Maybe I will get around to it after taxes.
