Hello to all,

This is going to be my first server build, infact it is my first build of any kind.I have chosen the parts and would like your
Opinions. I want this to be a media server, to hold all of my movies and be able to hold lots of drive's to stream to the PCH
I have verry large hands so I picked out this case, from all the reviews it look like an awesome case

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811133054
Next I picked this morherboard becauseit will hold 8 sata Drives.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131344
this processor looked like a natural fit

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115037
I plan to put in 4 gigs of memory, and have not picked out a video card yet.

I plan to use WD Digital AV-Gp hard drives.

I would like to hear your thoughts on what I have picked out so far.

Regards,
Don

Those links aren't working. You'll need to fix them before we can see what products you've selected.

Do you plan to do ripping, encoding, muxing, etc. on this box? If so, you'll probably get more bang for your buck by going with a quad-core proc (the new Core i7 procs are fantastic). If you're going to do all that stuff on another box, then this box is probably overpowered.

What OS are you planning to install? 32-bit or 64-bit?

What's your overall budget?

So WHS is a 32-bit operating system and, because of that, you won't be able to see more than 3.5GB of RAM. I know RAM is dirt cheap these days, but one suggestion would be to stick w/ 2GB of RAM and leave slots open for expansion if/when there's a 64-bit version of WHS available.

How much storage do you want/need to start with?

IMO you are spending way to much money for a DIY homeserver.

The CPU you have chosen is way over powered for what you will be needing it for.

Buy yourself a HP MediaSmart Server and you will still have $800 left to play with, And will have the HP extra software included.

If you are still set on building your own You can do it for less than $600 & still have all of the function that you want.

Agreed with CBick. Unless there's something else you're planning on doing w/ the server that you haven't expressed yet, you're overbuilding the box. You can get the new EX485 series plus a couple extra 1.5TB hard drives for well under a grand and you're good to go.

What makes you want to go the DIY route?

Agree with the comments above; this seems to be WAY over-configured and over-priced for what you need. Get a reconditioned EX47o from HP ( http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2009/01 ... oppingcom/ ), add a Sans Digital TR4M external enclosure and use the cash remaining for some WD hard drives.
