So my IT guy did the format and CHKDSK. He said there was only 2 bad sectors.

Than it's not the drive (actually, that is a pretty low #), so pull that second stick of RAM and go for it. That has to be the answer or you have something really weird going on there.

Now remember, the install is going to see that formatted partition, so this time DON'T delete it. Install ON it.

I will also add that if it doesn't work with the single stick of RAM, swap the RAM sticks and try again. You *could* have a bad stick of RAM.

If it does work the first time, shutdown your system and install the second stick along with the first, turn on your system, update your BIOS and keep moving forward.

We checked the ram while on the phone the other day, so should not be a problem. When you put the second stick in, the bios will detect it, you don't have to update the bios.

I'm now in suspense waiting in anticipation as to whether the install will work or not.

I've never had such a hard time getting an OS on a system since I learned the hard way that Windows will only work with certain brands of USB floppy drives while loading the SiS RAID drivers for the MSS images.

Good luck, Sean, keep us updated.

BTW, does anyone know the answer to the USB/PS2 adapter question? It will nag me :(

(I am just reading this thread for the first time and this may already be answered. But you asked before and it isn't yet so I will reply. If I duplicate please accept my apologies. )

The adapter should work fine. I use one myself on my current Vista build and also on my prior machine. No issues with either one.

And I think this thread set the record for the most active in a short period!

I hope you are trying that install with ONE stick of memory... It does matter at times with Vista.

EDIT: And, by the way, you are definitely getting better advice here than elsewhere from what I have seen.

UPDATE

No luck so far. I put the newly formated HDD in and removed one stick of RAM. Went through the install process and got to the point of Expanding Files 86%... and I got the following error

"Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify the installation sources are accessable, and restart the installation. Error: 0xC000001D"

I'm trying it again...

At this point, I'm whipped...the only thing I can suggest is trying to install XP.

Believe me, I've never had so much trouble just loading an operating system.
