So I'm looking to provide a play/sleep area for the MediaSmartServer.net kitties, Max and George. This will be in the garage, so plenty of space, it has a window and partial glass door so they can see out. I've looked at cat trees available on Ebay and various sites, and the nice big ones with multiple perches and tunnels are $200+. I'm not adverse to spending the money if I believe the quality is good, but I have concerns about that without seeing them.

The other thing I like is the wall-mounted units, such as WallCats and KatWallks. Those look pretty cool but are very expensive for the quantity I'd want to get.

At this point I'm considering building a combination of a cat tree and wall-mounted shelves myself to get the best of both worlds. I'm no master carpenter but I can smash my thumb with a hammer like the best of you.

What are the rest of you doing to save your furniture and keep your furry friends entertained? Got any recommendations on places to score supplies, best practices, plans, etc?

Some old 2x4 pieces and plywood scraps will look wonderful when covered with old rug scraps. Saw, nails and a staple gun (with long staples for the rug) is all it takes. Custom-build it into your space. And it is easily changed.

This may sound awfully dumb to ask, but since you are in CO, can I assume that the garage is heated?

JohnBick, that's the general idea of where I was headed, I'd like to do something pretty freaking cool for them though.

jd, they're primarily outdoor kitties, and the garage is semi-heated. They come in with us at night when it's super cold.

I actually did that with an empty Mac-n-Cheese box when I was young, it actually kept the cat entertained for quite a while!
