I don't know if it is good info for you.

Thanks, but Apple is not for me, even if I wanted to spend that much money...

:offtopic: OK, this is a bit shameless, but I have decided to put the money into this:

http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=12099679

Do i need a Netbook? NO Can I save one dog from the gas? YES

Adoptions are through the floor, and people are abandoning animals more every day during hard times.

Tomorrow I have to drive 300 miles each way to get her..that's the only bad part!

Congratulation for having a heart.

I'm probably to selfish to even have ever though of that.

That's very noble of you John. It's said that these animals are euthanized. You'll now have a very loyal companion and good karma coming your way. I have 2 small dogs myself and couldn't imagine the thought of this being an option for them.

MSI Wind. Seriously. So much fun. It's awesome. BIOS upgrade gives 24% overclock from the manufacturer! You can upgrade memory, wifi card, hard drive ...

So I picked up the Acer Aspire netbook below:

Model: Acer Aspire One AOA110-1626 Onyx Black Intel Atom N270(1.60GHz) 8.9" WSVGA 1GB Memory 16GB SSD Netbook
Newegg Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834115508

I don't know if I'll keep it long term but it's quite convenient for access to the web, email, and viewing videos like youtube online. I'm even considering having this "netbook" be a companion to my work "notebook" when I travel since I also have a blackberry. That would be the perfect combination in my opinion. Travelling light while being "connected" is key.

I thought I would be satisfied with the default Linux install, Linpus Lite, but I have a 3G USB stick that is not currently supported by the kernel version of Linux provided. In my view, a netbook without access to the net anywhere you might be is not much of a netbook. So....

I installed Windows XP on it and started to participate in the Aspire User Forum (http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/) to get some tips on optimizing it and scaling it down to run effectively on the netbook including using a portion of your memory as a RAM Drive to speed up temp file access, etc.

So far so good...not much more to say...the keyboard is "acceptable" but I hate the placement of the SHIFT keys. Maybe I just have to get used to it.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.

I almost didn't believe you at first because I have been looking into getting a SSD for my netbook and they run about $500 for 16GB SSD. The machine you got is priced at $350 so I am not sure how Acer or Newegg is making profit. It's amazing. It'd be cheaper for me to buy the Acer and toss it just for the SSD.

The model that I linked to above only has a 3-cell battery. The model I got has the 6 cell battery but doesn't appear to be offered by Newegg (I didn't get mine from newegg but from a local supplier near me). The 6 cell battery allows the netbook to last about ~5 hours in real world performance (theoretical 7-8 hours) vs. 2-3 hours with the 3 cell battery.

John- have fun with the dog- we're a mutt sort of family outselves - dont quite get why people pay for a dog with papers when the ones from the shelter love you just as much (although have to admit out mutt isn't the smartest dog- laughing)

All4Fun-

the 6 cell battery- does it fit in the same space as the 3 cell or does it add a hump?

To tell you the truth, I don't know. I've attached a picture of the netbook. The battery is the long strip at the back going the width of the netbook. You can be the judge.
