Many routers won't forward outbound packets that are destined to come back in over the external interface, at least that's been the experience I've seen with many routers. Glad to hear it's working!

I just got Uverse as well and I was trying to follow Neil's final method of getting remote access working, but I'm a bit confused. Neil, did you keep port forwarding enabled after you moved all the devices to go into the switch rather than the 2wire? If so, what settings did you keep? After did you have to go over to Windows Home Server Console and configure the router?

Hi ruestir13, Yes I did keep all three necessary ports (80. 443 and 4125) forwarded. I set up an application in the router user interface forwarding these ports to the server and named it "hpserver" and then assigned it to the MSS as a hosted application. The router then issued a static IP address to the server. I did run router set up in the console after doing this but I kept getting a warning that port forwarding had failed. As the MSS can be accessed over the net (but not from withing the home network) I just told it to ignore the warning and the icon turned green and all is good. Hope that helps.

Michael correctly explained previously how to do it. Basically you'll have two routers, the uverse gateway and your x-brand router.

The uverse gateway will have an ethernet cable to one of your TV boxes and another cable to your x-brand router. The x-brand router will be connected as a DMZplus enabled device on the uverse gateway.

In your x-brand router you will need to configure ports 80, 443 and 4125. For some reason I also have ports 1138 and 8912 open. In this router you will also configure your primary and secondary DNS domain name servers. These are gathered from the internet connection details on the uverse gateway internet connection details page.

I was able to do this with an Airport Extreme router which is not UPnP. I can access the server now just like I did before uverse came along. I can access from within my network as well as remotely.

Let me know if you need more details.

Hi, I just got the EX485 and is having a hard time setting up the server. Right now I have AT&T U-Verse (uverse). I have a belkin router (F5D8233-4) behind the 2wire. The dmzplus mode is click on the 2wire router. I setup the belkin router for the wep, and mac address filter. There are no other changes to the router. When I connect the server to the belkin router, my laptop can't find the server unless I connect the laptop to the router using a LAN line. If I use the wireless connection on my laptop, I can never find the server. Does anyone know how I can resolve this?
I have been using connecting the server to the 2wire. I would like to connect everything to the belkin router and turn off the 2wire wireless.
I have very limited knowledge on setting up router and network, so please provide detail instruction. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
George

PLEASE post the details. I've got an Airport Extreme, and I'm having issues.

The Airport is in bridged mode right now, and that leaves me no place to input the ports. If I go into either of the other modes, I'm told that my DHCP conflicts with the WAN IP.

I'd love to know how you set up everything.

I have been working on tutorial showing the GUI for the 3800HGV-B and how to open the ports for the MSS. The process is easy, only took me 4 days to get everything working. This is a bit simplistic so it may offend the gifted techies. I write these things down so I can remember what I did a year from now when I mess up my settings.

If anyone is interested I will be happy to enter it in when I get some free time.

That'd be great, and either you or one of us mods can turn it into a wiki entry.

Can we get this Wiki item posted? I just had U-verse installed, and didn't think to check if others had experienced issues getting the MSS to work properly. Now, of course, my remote access doesn't work (tested by connecting to company VPN). I can access it over the home network, but not remotely.

Are you testing that remote access from within your LAN? If so, try a REAL remote test -- from a library or a friend's house. Or, lacking friends  , send me a PM with your url (no passwords) and I'll be glad to try it from here.

There are a number of discussions of this situation on other threads so let's not steal this thread for this discussion...

OK, I received your PM and attempted to access your address within the last 5 minutes. It timed out so there is something wrong in your setup. I was able to successfully ping the address so your DNS is set up correctly and the problem is in the configuration of the MSS.

A connection via a VPN is not a remote connection, it is the equivalent of a local connection for this discussion; you should have all your local functionality available to you at the other end of the VPN connection. Of course your corporate VPN may block some of the ports/functions you need for the MSS. Some folks have found a corporate VPN works for them, others have not been able to get it to work at all. I recommend you get the regular remote access working first and only then attempt to get the VPN working. (By the way, remember that this would put your MSS on the corporate network where everyone else has access to it. I don't know how large your company is, how much trust you place in all your co-workers, how sensitive data is on your MSS or whether your company might have policies about doing this but you do want to consider the ramifications of all that.)

You also do not want to test the "real" (non-VPN) remote access from a corporate site as there are often firewalls in place that would prohibit the connection. Thus the recommendation to do it from another home LAN or a library or some place where the ports you need would not be blocked. I do not know whether an active VPN connection would preclude my ability to access your MSS remotely. If you had one active when I attempted this we may want to try again when the VPN is NOT active on the MSS.

I am not an ATT Uverse user and have NO experience with that product so someone else needs to jump in on the specifics here. But in the interim I suggest you make sure that you have ports 80, 443, 4125 & 3389 forwarded to the MSS. I tried to access your MSS with both http (port 80) and HTTPS (port 443) and both failed with a timeout. My first suspicion would be a port forwarding problem, my second would be VPN interference.

Drop me another PM if you want me to try again. (Let's keep all the discussion here for the benefit of future readers, please.)

I was pretty sure that you wouldn't be able to access it.

Please explain how connecting my company laptop to the company's network via VPN software installed on the laptop would put my MSS on the company's network. This is news to me. This is contrary to what I think I know about VPN's.

Testing remote access in the following manner has always worked for me in the past:
Local name = "carneymedia" - I enter this in the browsers address bar when I'm at home.
Domain Name = "carneymediaserver.com" = I enter this in the browsers address bar when I'm anywhere but home.
If I'm home, and not connected to VPN, "carneymedia" works, and "carneymediaserver.com" does not work.
If I'm home, and connected to VPN, "carneymedia" does not work, and "carneymediaserver.com works.
If I'm not at home (I'm at work, a friends house etc", "carneymedia" does not work, and "carneymediaserver.com works.
Testing the first 2 scenarios is how I knew I had finally gotten remote access working when my ISP was Comcast. When the 2nd scenario worked, my remote access then worked anywhere.

I realize that I have a port forwarding issue (or something similar). I went through the U-Verse Gateway's software & did what seemed necessary to allow the right kind of traffic - HTTPS & something else I can't remember right now - to the MSS, but it didn't work. It's currently back to being setup that way & doesn't work right now.

Users above seem to have solved this issue by using their old router - a Linksys WRT54G in my case - and setting up a DMZ. I'd like to get more information about how they did this. I've been able to follow most of the steps, but got stuck at using the primary & secondary DNS numbers from the U-Verse Gateway and entering them into my WRT54G. I am unsure of where to enter them as I don't see anything that screams out at me to "enter them here!"

Any help in this area is appreciated,
Blair

Blair, your custom DNS name resolves to an SBCGlobal.net address, I'm not sure if this is right because I don't know how Uverse shows up. Please PM me your external IP address (should be in the router GUI), and I'll see if I can tell more.

Sent you a PM Alex, but wanted to add here that SBCGlobal may be correct. AT&T probably purchases SBC somewhere along the way, and it just hasn't been updated yet.

I found a tutorial for the u-verse router configuration, see if it helps you set up the correct port forwards for 80, 443, and 4125 (I believe 80 is called HTTP and 443 is called HTTPS in the application configuration settings of your router).

Your IP address checks out, TZO is resolving it correctly and forwarding it to your IP.
