I thought I'd add to this thread to show how I mounted my spiffy new TV. When I "built" my house the builder put a nook above the fireplace for a TV. In 1998, I'd not heard of a flat screen TV. This worked great for the old 27" crt.

Since I "built" the house, I know were every stud and rafter are located. I took pictures of most everything during construction. This really helped me to "engineer" the TV mount. I knew I needed to add some sort of stud in the nook for the mount. I wanted to mount the TV in front of the nook, but still have access to it. I am planning on keeping my satellite box, media connect and maybe someday a PC in there.

The first picture shows the fireplace and all of the framing. It made it easy for me to figure out how to tie in the two studs to the rafters or floor joists. The TV weighs about 70+ LBS and the wall mount is about 50+ lbs. So, I felt 2X6 studs were the way to go. The top plate (second picture) is lag bolted to the floor joists with 3 1/2" screws. The sole plate is held on to the top of the nook with six 3" sheet rock screws. The 2X6 studs are held in place with 3" sheet rock screws. It's seems to be pretty sturdy.

The articulated wall mount was very pricey. It's waay over engineered, but that's the way I like things to be. It's not real pretty behind the TV, but it works just how I like it. The mount extends 29" from the the studs. It' give me amble room to get behind the TV and in the nook.

For now, I'll just use my vintage stereo (aka the Big Unit) for movie sound affects. The Big Unit is in the next to the last picture. The past picture shows my cocker spaniel, Bailey, beside the amp section for scale.

Sweet looking setup ossodiseppia. I actually just had my tv mounted over my fireplace as well. Originally I was thinking about taking this approach:

That looks really clean, nice work.
Are you getting any interference running that AC cord along side the others?

Thanks. Do you mean interference with the over-the-air TV signal? No, and I am using rabbit ears. Right now, the TV stations are not broadcasting their HD signals at full power. That will change when they turn off the analog signal this month (in Denver). I'm not detecting any interference with the audio, either.

Some day, I'll clean up the spaghetti back there.

Well, hoping to have a wall mounting project over the next few days. I will be mounting a 58in Panny. I was initially going to run the wires through the wall as you did, but I will have only a little bit of space between the bottom of the TV and the A/V cabinet right underneath. Instead I will just get one of those cable raceways from Home Depot to to cover the exposed part. I have this raceway in the playroom, and once I painted it the color of the walls it blends in very nicely. Down the road I can always cut into the wall. The other thing holding me back is I thought I read you are not supposed to be running a power cord behind the wall. It seems silly though to run an outlet behind the tv to plug in because now your tv is no longer connected to the power conditioner. Monoprice had a recessed power pro kit that I almost bought, but once I decided I was just going to use a cable raceway there was no need to do any more cutting into the walls.

The only thing missing is I need to pick up a stud finder. My only concern is that it may not work properly in my presence since I am a stud

Oh yeah, this is the wall mount I got from Monoprice:

Too funny. I found that my studfinder works great unless the wall is popcorned, like my garage; you can also just measure off the distance between studs with a measuirng tape as well.

Pictures when you are done please!

Jim

Especially of any smashed thumbs, drywall saw cuts, or electrical burns. :D

That should work, just fine. You can cut into the wall later. It should be very easy to tap into an existing outlet on that wall. If it's an interior wall, it's a snap. Exterior walls have insulation, so, it's a little more difficult to do. I bought an 42" drill bit at home depot to drill behind some walls.

Yes, you have to use the correct romex wiring behind the wall. Monoprice even mentions that. They make it very clear that their kit should be used for low voltage, unless you use solid core wire. If you go this route, check the amp rating on the circuit breakers before you buy the wire. Then, ask which gauge wire you should get at the hardware store.

Since I last posted, I've bought three new PCs and sold my mediasmart connect (for more than I paid for it). \:D/ I also bought a Sony wireless HD transmitter that allows me to watch satellite TV upstairs in my bedroom.

Behind my big tv is my HDPC, HD-PVR, satellite set top box and Sony wireless transmitter. In the love nest, I have an Acer AspireRevo and the Sony receiver. My home office has two HP Z400 workstations (for work) and my new HP HPE-410t.

When the new HD-PVR card comes out, I'll upgrade to it and get a remote.

Good luck with your project. You'll have a great time getting it all set up. Post pics when you're done.
