Greetings,

My WHS is dying, and I'm thinking about what to buy. I only use it for backup, and sometimes remote access. Has anyone tried My Cloud?

Thanks,
Shane.

There are a few devices in that line, here is a couple of you tube reviews on 3 of them.

I have used the MY Book for a couple of my clients, the My book is basically a backup usb drive, which is more then they had.

GoodLuck

Google Home NAS and you will find lots of devices. Most of the are not Windows, which may or may not be something you would want.

Thanks for the links.

I purchased the WD 8 TB My Cloud. I haven't set it up yet. NAS should provide everything I need.

Shane.

If you don't mind, when you get it setup and have had a chance to use it a bit, would you let us know what you think?

I have been thinking of getting a few ( My Clouds) for friends and family that I got (My Books) for years ago and they are getting a little long in the tooth. 5-6 years. and the My Books don't backup the PC, just the doc/pic/music/video but if they lost a OS drive they would be out of luck.

I would be really curious how the PC backups work? How many, bare metal backups? incremental ? Etc.

I suppose with win10 you could just use the OS to backup to a folder in the My Cloud?

Anyway, thxs in advance for any info and Good Luck.
The micro servers were great while they lasted :-(

My Cloud is working good so far. There is a USB 3.0 expansion port on the back (similar to Drive Extender), if 8 TB isn't enough.

I was getting frustrated with Windows Backup, so I wrote my own backup program. I back up documents and user files. I don't back up programs, temporary files, or anything else.

My only concern is that the drive is formatted as Ext3/4. I haven't tried to restore a file yet, but I'm worried that if I copy a file from a drive formatted as NTFS to Ext3/4 and then back again, I might lose some file attributes. Also, I would like to encrypt my files during backup using the cipher command line tool. Cipher only works on an NTFS drive, so I don't know what would happen when I try to copy an encrypted file to an Ext3/4 drive.

Shane.

Thx for the info, sounds like a Bigger "My Book" with a nic card.
The "My book" had a little program that would automatically backup you personal files on a schedule, but no bare metal.
It is a shame "My Cloud" doesn't have some kind of bare metal backup something on it.

Are you saying that Windows Backup is not playing nice to backup the PC to a folder? If that is the case, then I guess I will just stay with the My Books for my Peeps. They don't have enough data to warrant a My Cloud.

Again, thx for the info and Much Luck.

Two advantages of My Cloud is:
  1. Remote access. I can log into it from anywhere.
  2. It doesn't tie up a USB port. It plugs directly into the network, and is available to everyone on the same network.

My Cloud starts at 2 TB. I just bought the max (8 TB) because I always seem to be running out of space.

Windows Backup does what is was designed to do (I wasn't getting any error messages). But I needed advanced features that I couldn't find anywhere, so I decided to write my own backup software.

The following programs are available from the downloads page:
  • WD Sync - File Synchronization App
  • WD SmartWare - Backup Software

I don't know if WD SmartWare supports bare metal backup.

Shane.

I have been refraining from cloud stuff due to how do you get it back if say you change providers.
For example my wife uses a ipad and takes pictures then sends it to icloud or memories.
So if I change to say kindle all is Lost?

I understand what (Ruben Rocha) is talking about Real "Cloud" services. Icloud/memories/google drive/dropbox/ SugarSync/ box/Amazon Cloud Drive/onedrive/Azure/etc.

My sig pretty much explains how I feel about "The real Cloud". I won't use them.
I won't use win10 either because I know that microsoft is moving to "windows as a service" where you will have to pay monthly/yearly fee to use the OS you use to be able to buy and the "cloud is going to make that possible.

But WD "My Cloud" is a NAS that sets on your internal network, so you have control like the Micro server. I believe it runs Linux or Unix or something like that, most NAS do.

I see your points on Networked access and usb slot, I didn't think of remote access as I don't do that now with WHS.

Thx for the info, I think I will go for the 2TB My Clouds for my peoples, it will be nice to be able to access them to help when they need it.
Good Luck
