I have an entry level 4 bay NAS from QNAP and have run out of space and ready to move up to a more powerful 8 bay NAS, but was wondering the difference in cost from buying a ready made solution from QNAP or building my own. I expect it to be cheaper building my own but not sure whether the difference will warrant me sourcing and learning to build a server.

QNAP Specification http://www.qnap.com/uk/index.php?lang=e ... =14604&g=1 around £750

I have no spare parts lying a round so would need everything, if you could give me a rough pricing list of parts and software I would require.

Thank you

You did not say which nas you have or drive sizes.
But have you considered using 3 or 4TB dives in your existing system?

DIY is always cheaper as far as hardware goes.
As well as you can build it the way you want.

Software is another story.
You could far exceed the price of a ready build system.

Then if you have never done so, configuring a server can be a pain.

A price is near impossible to give.

There are a few build examples here if you search the site.
Some are huge and some are quite simple.
