Storage spaces going offline after I added a disk as it advised !!!

I had a storage pool with a single storage space across two disks of 2TB each. Which was getting full so windows advised to add a disk. I bought another 3TB and simply added it to the storage pool. All seemed ok at first it sept for the fact that the next day my storage space had disappeared with zero warning!!!! I went into storage space manager and found my storage space offline and every time I click to bring it back on line it immediately just goes offline again. The disks also seem to be completely unbalanced even though there is tons of space on the new drive. what the **** is going on and why does this seem so entirely unreliable.... how do i fix this when its impossible to get my storage space back online... its completely nuts !!!

I should also say I have not run out of capacity... info in "manage my storage space" is as follows:
Using 3.96TB of 6.36TB pool capacity
My storage space
two way mirror
3.00TB
using 3.96TB pool capacity
Then it says "no capacity add 1 drive" which is what i did when i bought a huge 3TB disk and added it to the storage pool !!!
I have three physical disks of 1.81TB + 1.81TB + 2.72TB
all say they are ok and have a green tick next two them when i view the physical drives
I have no slots left so i cant now add another physical drive three is the limit as fourth disk is the system disk.

Has anyone come across windows 8 storage pool / space issues

This is very old, but I missed it when it came out.
I have not used storage spaces I use Stablebit Drive pool, but my guess is:
Quote:
two way mirror
You gave the description of your storage spaces and I think your problem is you need another drive as it is saying. Key word being mirror, can't have a mirror with 3 drives (that I know of)

Solution may be: 1.81TB + 1.81TB + 2.72TB + 2.72TB

This way both sets of drives can be mirrored.

Just a guess. Might help someone and I know Storage spaces has had some upgrading since this thread was started.

In Drive pool it lets me pick how many copies of each file you want spread over "all the drives". I have (4) 4TB reds and I setup drive pool to keep 3 copies of each file.

well I use storage spaces on win 10 but win 8 had issues with it.
what he needs to do is run optimize in the storage space menu.
if you don't elect it during adding a drive it will be a manual process. That will re-balance it.

Myself I had a issue that said I need two drives added. I added one drive and it said I need another drive. even though I had ample free space.
But after optimize finished it was all okay again.
probably what happened to him since he never posted again.

Also even though you can mix and match sizes it is suggested not to do so.
With large discrepancies in sizes you end up with some wasted space on the smallest and largest drive.

Thx for the info! Good to know.
I doubt I will use win10 or Win8 and If I did I would probably not use storage spaces.
But I would use win8/win10 before I would go to a NAS.

I have played with win2012E enough that I could be tempted by win8/8.1 as it has kind of the same desktop but without all the Win10 spying.

Thx again for the followup. I know someday WHS V1 will not be an option anymore. :-# and if still alive I will have to do something #-o

well I was using stablebit on win10. But whsv1 would not backup the pool drive only each individual drive which is all duplicated x2.
So it always took forever.
Using storage spaces with whs1 works on the pool drive now. In fact you really can't access the drives anymore. Like you could in stablebit.
