Got an email today from Microsoft indicating they are retiring their TechNet Subscription Service. My subscription is up for renewal and I will be allowed to renew it but after next year this service will end. I am sort of bummed out by this but over the past couple years Microsoft has done a good job at bumming me out but what can you do but move on. I will renew my subscription to get another year of the service but I will miss having access to it for sure.

The following link provides some additional information on this for those interested in reading: http://technet.microsoft.com/subscriptions/ms772427

I agree 100%.
They are punishing the subscribers (like me) that used it properly instead of selling copies and key codes.
I already renewed so I am good thorough February 2015 - but then it may be MSN at 3 times the cost!

I really would think Microsoft could come up with a better solution than this...

Its just another sad day in the life experience with Microsoft. It bothered me a bit when they reduced the license keys from 10 to 2 but then again I never really needed all those keys so it was not horrible for me but I suspected then people were abusing the privilege and if so then Microsoft could simply disable the abused keys and who knows maybe they did.

Gardian pointed out someone on eBay selling WS2012E keys for like $150 then they reduced the price to $100. Sounds too good to be true but I wouldn't touch it because the value was way too low and if I buy Microsoft Software online I want the full retail packaging not the key. The MSDN option is way to high of a price for me for what it offers so I will just pass on it.

I will renew my subscription to TechNet Next week but I do so with some reservation.

That ebay cheap seller disappeared, big surprise. He had to be selling keys without COA's. It was people like him that have ruined it for everybody, but, now I hope they (Microsoft) don't rub salt in the wound and raise prices on everything like Win2012E $500 bucks, really. Us normal people can't afford to TRY software if it costs that much.

What I see happening is (and I shouldn't be saying this, so sorry in advance) What I see happening is the crackers and boot loaders will become more main stream just because of the price of testing. Then once someone has tested something that was cracked or boot loaded, why not just keep going with it.

I really think they are shooting themselves in the foot on this one. Plus the loss of feedback, that had to be worth something.
A sad day indeed. I have been loyal to microsoft since Dos 6.1 (win3.1) and they just seem to want to piss people off at every turn.
:Rant Off:
Thx for the info, I was thinking about joining, but not now, I will have to save my pennies to buy something that I hope works since I won't be able to test it.

One can never tell what's going through the mind of Microsoft but how they have annoyed me these past few years has caused me to think more and more about other solutions so much so I decided to put off a build I had planned for this weekend especially since the term Hackintosh keeps entering my mind and I am not sure I want to go down that road just yet. I do not foresee Microsoft increasing their prices anytime soon but then again who knows what's going through the minds at the folks at Microsoft.

While I am annoyed I know as time passes I will calm down and move forward but I have to be honest I do think about other solutions more and more but have yet to make the move. For now I will just site on the sidelines and observe.

I hear ya, I have and always will keep my eye open for "something else" someday somebody is going to take Microsoft's top spot away. Server and OS. But at 53 years young, I figure I will stick it out and let the next generation burn that MS bridge :-)

I hear ya there. The only think the next generation understands is Facebook so if we leave it to them who knows what we will end up with.

I haven't quite figured out yet how this will affect me. As a Microsoft MVP I get full access to technet plus, etc..., just haven't had time to read into more to see if this will effectively kill my access as well.

Damian you get MSDN, so no, this won't impact your access to evaluation copies of software.

I just renewed my TechNet Subscription so I am good until Aug 15, 2014 which allows me plenty of time to change my keys to keep those units running. Most of what I do have running is for testing purposes where I get to try things and see how they work out which is better to do that on a test rig rather then unit I rely on. For this reason I will absolutely miss TechNet but the cost for an MSDN Subscription is way to heavy for me to justify.

Unfortunately the trial periods for what I do are not long enough for me to beat the hell out of things but I can take comfort that if I try something and mess things up I can always connect to my server and perform a PC Recovery so its not all that bad.

Anyway it was a fun ride while it lasted and I have calmed down and just have to accept what Microsoft has done but it does not mean I can try out other solutions. So as I repurpose my test units I will be trying Linux and I do have plans to build a Hackintosh or purchase one to play with. My commitment towards running a Microsoft solution is still strong but there are other solutions worth checking out.

Got an email today to inform me that my TechNet Subscription has been extended an additional 90 days so I am good until Nov 2014. Deep down inside I just wish they would just change their mind about retiring this service but that's just wishful thinking on my part.
